Main Functions of the Job
- Develop and maintain a professional and effective working relationship with the Deputy Manager and Registered Manager.
- To provide care in accordance with current best practice, according to policy and procedures, agreed standards, legislative requirements, relevant regulations under the direction of the Deputy Manager.
- Cover for the Deputy Manager in their absence. • To treat residents with respect and always maintain their privacy and dignity. • To assist in leading the care team, and provide support and guidance.
- Supervise and support the carers, including mandatory training.
- To assist in safeguarding the residents at all times; and to always speak up if you think that a resident is being harmed or negatively affected in some way.
- To interact with the residents in an appropriate manner; whilst always maintaining boundaries.
- Promote inclusion of residents in any social and recreational activities in order to assist in their stimulation and enjoyment in the Home.
- Develop trusting relationships with the residents and care team in order to run a smooth, safe, effective care service.
- To undertake relevant audits as and when specified, according to the procedures of the Home.
- To assist the Deputy Manager in order to ensure the smooth running of the Home and to take charge in the Deputy Manager’s absence.
- To provide stimulation within organised activities to meet client’s individual needs both inside and outside the Home’s environment using community resources and facilities.
- To encourage and enable residents to make choices and decisions through equal opportunities.
- To potentially participate in on-call cover, as needed, according to the requirements of the on-call rota. This must be in agreement with the Home Manager.
- To maintain care skills at a current level, and undertake such training and development as may from time-to-time be required to maintain that currency of practice.
- To assist in ensuring that all new staff receive comprehensive company inductions.
- Support the Manager and Deputy by covering annual leave and sickness.
- To supervise staff on a daily basis promoting safe practices.
- To act as a link between the Deputy Manager and Home Manager; and the Care staff. To use this link to: a) ensure clear lines of communication between the “coal face” and senior management within the Home. b) provide direction, support and guidance to Care staff. c) report on culture, care provision, staff conduct and issues or concerns with residents, to senior management within the Home.
Care Services
- To support residents in all aspects of daily living, including personal care, hygiene, dressing, eating, etc. whilst helping them to maintain their optimum level of independence. • Undertake the initial assessments of residents, in line with the policies and procedures of the Home.
- Ensure all resident care plans and records are updated accordingly, on a regular basis.

- Ensure all medications and controlled drugs are recorded, administered and replenished in line with the Home’s policies and procedures.
- To provide professional support and guidance to Senior Carers and Carers. This includes assessing that Senior Carers and Carers are competent to complete their job roles. This is to be assessed via supervision and “at the coal-face” monitoring.
- To monitor and assess Senior Carers as being competent to safely and effectively administer medication. This is to be completed according to the company timetable for medication competency assessments.
- To ensure that Carers are conducting themselves in a professional and resident centred way at all times.
- Act as key point of contact for any complaints or concerns with regards to residents, or members of the care team.
- To participate in resident and relative meetings.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.
Other Responsibilities
- Develop effective working relationships with the other employees within the Home.
- Work with the Deputy Manager in the recruitment and selection of new care staff, and completing supervision of the team.
- Assist in the production of staff rota’s in order to maintain safe staffing levels.
- Have a working understanding of the Care Act and CQC’s Essential Standards. To assist in the improvement and maintenance of these standards.
- The Head of Care will always be expected to work to and exceed the Code of Conduct for healthcare support workers and adult social care workers. This will help the Home to provide safe, guaranteed care and support. If this standard isn’t being maintained, the Head of Care must report this to senior management, and this must be addressed.
- Assist in the implementation of caring policies and procedures.
- Assist in the maintenance of the standards as required by legislation related to the registration of the Home.
- Attend Staff Meetings as scheduled, as and when required.
- Liaise with external Trust and Care agencies as needed. Professional Long-Term Caring Role
