Job Purpose
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Lightning Protection Engineer to join our team.
The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out site surveys, designing and installing lightning protection and earthing systems, completing inspection and testing requirements, and ensuring all works are delivered safely, professionally and to the required industry standards.

The role involves working on a variety of commercial, industrial and construction projects and requires someone who is technically minded, practical, organised and confident working both independently and as part of a wider team.
Key Responsibilities
Surveying & Site Assessment
- Carry out detailed site surveys and inspections of existing and proposed lightning protection systems.
- Assess buildings and structures to identify lightning protection and earthing requirements.
- Take accurate measurements and record site information, photographs and relevant technical details.
- Identify potential installation difficulties and communicate these to the relevant manager.
- Liaise with customers, contractors and other trades while working on site.
- Prepare clear and accurate survey reports and recommendations.
Design & Engineering
- Design lightning protection systems in accordance with relevant British Standards and industry requirements.
- Produce or assist with technical drawings, layouts and installation details.
- Calculate and determine appropriate protection zones, conductor routes, earth electrode requirements and bonding arrangements.
- Review existing systems and recommend remedial works or upgrades where required.
- Ensure designs are practical, cost-effective and suitable for installation.
- Provide technical advice and support to installation teams.
- Assist with quotations and technical information where required.
Installation & Site Work
- Install, modify and repair lightning protection and earthing systems.
- Install roof conductors, down conductors, earth electrodes, test points, clamps, bonding and associated components.
- Work safely at height and on a variety of building structures.
- Coordinate installation works with other contractors and trades.
- Ensure installations are neat, secure and completed to a high standard.
- Identify and resolve technical issues encountered during installation.
- Assist installation teams with technical guidance and problem solving where required.
Testing, Inspection & Certification
- Carry out testing and inspection of lightning protection and earthing systems.
- Complete continuity and earth resistance testing using appropriate test equipment.
- Identify defects, damage or non-compliant installations and recommend corrective action.
- Complete accurate inspection, testing and certification documentation.
- Maintain clear and accurate site records.
- Provide customers with appropriate technical reports and recommendations.
Health & Safety
- Follow all company health and safety procedures and site-specific requirements.
- Complete risk assessments and method statements where required.
- Ensure all work is carried out safely and in accordance with relevant legislation and industry standards.
- Correctly use PPE, access equipment and specialist tools.
- Report accidents, incidents, near misses and unsafe working conditions promptly.
- Maintain a safe and tidy working environment.
- Take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of colleagues and others affected by your work.
Customer & Team Responsibilities
- Maintain a professional approach when representing JJD on customer sites.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with customers, site managers and other contractors.
- Provide technical support and guidance to colleagues where required.
- Work effectively as part of a team while also being capable of working independently.
- Maintain company vehicles, tools and equipment in good working order.
- Complete paperwork, timesheets, job records and reports accurately and on time.
- Represent JJD professionally at all times.
- Maintain a positive attitude and contribute to a strong team culture.
Experience & Skills
Essential
- Previous experience within the lightning protection industry.
- Good knowledge of lightning protection and earthing systems.
- Experience carrying out site surveys, installations, inspections and testing.
- Good understanding of relevant British Standards and industry guidance.
- Ability to read and understand technical drawings.
- Competent using hand tools, power tools and specialist testing equipment.
- Good understanding of construction and building practices.
- Comfortable working at height.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to identify problems and find practical solutions.
Desirable
- Relevant lightning protection industry qualifications or training.
- Experience with lightning protection system design.
- Experience using CAD or other design software.
- Experience producing technical drawings and reports.
- Experience with earthing and bonding systems.
- Experience working on commercial and industrial projects.
- CSCS or relevant site card.
- IPAF qualification.
- PASMA qualification.
- SSSTS/SMSTS or other relevant site qualifications.

- Working on roofs, scaffolding, MEWPs and other access equipment.
- Travelling to customer and construction sites.
- Manual handling.
- Working around other trades and construction activities.
- Working within construction site environments and following site-specific procedures.
