About Gills
Gills Meat Products is a well-established UK food manufacturer supplying fresh and frozen products to retail, foodservice and wholesale customers nationwide. From our West Midlands facility we produce millions of products every year on modern production lines using automated equipment and industrial control systems. We are a fast-paced business with high expectations, where reliability, continuous improvement and accountability sit at the heart of everything we do.
The Role
We are looking for an exceptional Graduate Electrical Engineer to join our engineering team and grow into a key member of our manufacturing operation. This is a hands-on role in which you will gain practical experience maintaining, improving and supporting a wide range of industrial machinery and electrical systems.
Working alongside experienced engineers and production teams, you will take on increasing responsibility as your knowledge and confidence develop, supported by structured training and mentoring. It is an ideal opportunity for a high-calibre graduate who enjoys solving technical problems, has a genuine passion for engineering, and wants to build a long-term career in food manufacturing — with a clear path towards senior engineering and leadership roles.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical Maintenance & Engineering
· Assist with the maintenance, fault-finding and repair of electrical systems across the factory.
· Support planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activities to maximise equipment reliability.
· Help diagnose electrical faults on manufacturing and packaging equipment.
· Assist with machinery installations, upgrades and commissioning projects.
· Ensure all work is carried out safely and in accordance with company procedures.
Continuous Improvement
· Support projects to improve equipment performance, reliability and efficiency.
· Identify opportunities to reduce downtime and improve production output.
· Assist with root-cause analysis following equipment failures.
· Contribute ideas to raise engineering standards and maintenance practices.
Manufacturing Support
· Work closely with production teams to minimise downtime.
· Help maintain accurate engineering records and documentation.
· Support contractors and external service engineers when required.
· Develop a working understanding of food manufacturing standards and compliance requirements.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking an outstanding graduate with the intellect, drive and work ethic to become a future engineering leader at Gills.
Essential
· A first-class degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics or a closely related engineering discipline. Exceptional candidates holding a 2:1 supported by outstanding academic, project or practical evidence will also be considered.
· A genuine passion for engineering and problem-solving.
· Strong analytical and logical thinking, with excellent attention to detail.
· A proactive, self-motivated attitude and a real willingness to learn.
· Strong organisational skills and the ability to stay calm and methodical under pressure.
· Good communication and teamwork skills.
· A positive, hands-on approach to working within a manufacturing environment.
Desirable
· Practical or project experience with electrical systems, automation or PLC-controlled equipment.
· Full UK driving licence.
Development & Training
We will invest in the right person from day one. You will receive:
· Company-funded training towards recognised engineering qualifications where appropriate.
· Structured mentoring from experienced engineers.
· Comprehensive training in industrial electrical systems, automation, fault-finding, PLC-controlled machinery and food manufacturing equipment.
· Exposure to a wide variety of manufacturing technologies and engineering projects.
· A clear progression route into Electrical Engineer, Senior Engineer, Engineering Supervisor and, ultimately, Engineering Manager roles based on performance.
Requirements
· Immediate right to work in the UK is essential — no visa sponsorship is available.
· A willingness to work on-site within a manufacturing environment.
· A full UK driving licence (preferred but not essential).
Selection Process
Shortlisted candidates will complete an psychometric assessment designed to evaluate problem-solving ability, engineering aptitude and their approach to working safely within a manufacturing environment. Success in the assessment will lead to an in person interview with senior management. We are looking for motivated, high-potential individuals with a strong work ethic and the ambition to become future engineering leaders at Gills.
