Maintenance Operative

About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and highly skilled Maintenance Operative to join our team across our two 4-star Mercure hotels in Paddington.
This is a hands-on role for someone with a minimum of 4 years' hotel maintenance experience who can work independently, manage multiple tasks, and maintain the highest standards of presentation, safety, and guest satisfaction.
The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out both reactive and planned preventative maintenance throughout the hotels while ensuring that all guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house facilities remain in excellent condition.
Working Pattern
- Full-time, permanent position.
- Rotating shift pattern covering 7 days a week.
- Two days off per week.
- One full weekend off each month.
- Flexibility is essential to meet the operational needs of the hotels.
Reporting To
Senior Operations Manager
Key ResponsibilitiesGeneral Maintenance
- Carry out daily reactive maintenance throughout both hotels.
- Complete all planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schedules.
- Inspect guest rooms, corridors, public areas and back-of-house facilities.
- Ensure all maintenance requests are completed promptly and to a high standard.
- Record all completed works and report outstanding issues.
Painting & Decorating
- Prepare and paint walls, ceilings, doors, skirting boards and woodwork.
- Carry out wallpaper repairs where required.
- Repair cracks and damaged plaster before decorating.
- Ensure all decoration work meets a high-quality finish.
Carpentry
- Repair doors, locks, hinges and door closers.
- Repair or replace furniture.
- Install shelving and fixtures.
- Repair wardrobes, desks and cabinets.
- Adjust door frames and furniture fittings.
Plumbing
- Repair leaking taps and pipework.
- Replace toilets, cistern components and flush mechanisms.
- Unblock sinks, showers and drains.
- Replace silicone around baths, showers and sinks.
- Carry out minor plumbing repairs throughout the property.
Electrical (Minor Works)
- Replace lamps and light fittings.
- Replace switches, sockets and electrical accessories where competent.
- Test emergency lighting.
- Report major electrical faults to specialist contractors.
Flooring & Tiling
- Replace damaged carpet tiles where required.
- Install laminate and vinyl flooring.
- Repair and replace floor tiles.
- Re-grout and re-silicone bathrooms.
- Carry out minor tiling works.
HVAC & Air Conditioning
- Clean air conditioning filters.
- Carry out routine maintenance inspections.
- Report faults requiring specialist contractors.
- Monitor equipment performance.
Preventative Maintenance
Carry out routine inspections including:
- Guest rooms.
- Bathrooms.
- Public areas.
- Fire doors.
- Windows.
- Lighting.
- Plumbing fixtures.
- Furniture.
- Air conditioning systems.
- Plant equipment.
Ensure all preventative maintenance records are completed accurately.
Fire & Health & Safety
- Carry out weekly fire alarm testing.
- Carry out monthly emergency lighting tests.
- Assist with fire safety compliance.
- Ensure all maintenance work complies with Health & Safety legislation.
- Report any hazards immediately.
- Maintain accurate maintenance and compliance records.
General Duties
- Assemble furniture.
- Move furniture and equipment when required.
- Maintain external areas.
- Keep workshops and storage areas clean and organised.
- Ensure all tools and equipment are maintained in good working order.
- Work closely with Housekeeping and Front Office to minimise disruption to guests.
- Assist with hotel refurbishment projects when required.
- Liaise with external contractors and monitor completed works.
Skills & Experience
The successful candidate must have:
- Minimum 4 years' maintenance experience within a hotel environment.
- Excellent knowledge of general building maintenance.
- Strong painting and decorating skills.
- Good knowledge of plumbing, carpentry and basic electrical repairs.
- Experience carrying out preventative maintenance programmes.
- Experience with fire alarm testing and emergency lighting testing.
- Ability to diagnose faults and complete repairs independently.
- Good organisational and time management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- A positive attitude and strong work ethic.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure in a busy hotel environment.
- Flexibility to work weekends, evenings and public holidays when required.
Desirable
- Experience working within an Accor or branded hotel.
- Knowledge of hotel maintenance software.
- Health & Safety awareness.
- Fire safety knowledge.
- Basic IT skills.
- Full UK driving licence (preferred).
