Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and physically capable Port Operative to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the efficient handling of materials, loading and unloading vessels, and supporting operations within a busy port environment. This role requires a strong focus on safety and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced setting. Experience with forklift operation is highly desirable but not essential as full training will be given. The position offers an excellent opportunity to develop skills in logistics, materials handling and port operations.
Responsibilities
- Load and unload cargo from ships, lorries, and containers using appropriate equipment such as forklifts and manual handling techniques
- Operate forklifts safely to move materials around the port area
- Assist with ensuring goods are stored correctly and efficiently
- Conduct routine inspections of equipment and materials to ensure safety standards are maintained
- Support with tasks related to port operations, including basic repairs or adjustments as needed
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations at all times during operations
- Participate in inventory counts and maintain accurate records of stock movements
- Collaborate with team members to optimise workflow and improve operational efficiency
Requirements
- Must be 18 years old or above.
- Must have valid driving license and vehicle due to location.
- Previous experience in a port setting is desirable but not essential as training will be provided.
- Strong mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot equipment issues as they arise.
- Proficiency in materials handling techniques and best practices desirable.
- Ability to operate a forklift safely; certification is advantageous but not mandatory as training may be provided.
- Capability to perform heavy lifting tasks (up to 25 kg) consistently throughout the shift.
- Excellent organisational skills with attention to detail to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
- A proactive attitude towards teamwork and problem-solving in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility to work weekends when required.

Holiday : 20 Days plus Bank holidays. An additional 1 days holiday will be granted per 12 months continuously employed up to a maximum of 25 days.
Working hours : 40 hours per week. 07:00-04:00 Monday to Friday. Start and finish times may vary subject to operational requirements. Vessel discharge days 06:00-18:00
Overtime : Work carried out in addition to the 8 hour day will be paid at the hourly rate x 1.5 (Time and a half).
Pay: £12.88-£15.00 per hour
