What will you be doing?
As a Medical Underwriting Coordinator, you'll play a key role in supporting customers through the medical underwriting process, ensuring applications are handled accurately, efficiently and with genuine care. Working closely with customers, medical professionals and underwriting colleagues, you'll help deliver a smooth and positive experience from application through to decision.
You'll:
- Set up new medical underwriting applications, accurately recording customer, policy and benefit information.
- Request, monitor and follow up medical evidence requirements to support underwriting decisions.
- Keep customers informed throughout the process, providing updates and responding to enquiries with professionalism, empathy and clarity.
- Handle inbound and outbound calls with customers, medical professionals and third parties, gathering and sharing information accurately and efficiently.
- Build strong working relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure excellent customer outcomes.
- Maintain detailed and accurate case records and documentation.
- Manage multiple cases and priorities while meeting agreed service levels.
- Learn and develop expertise in medical underwriting processes, products and regulatory requirements.
- Use technology, including AI-powered tools where appropriate, to improve efficiency, accuracy and customer experience.
- Identify opportunities to simplify processes and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Handle confidential medical information responsibly, ensuring compliance with data protection, information security and regulatory requirements.
- Support fair customer outcomes by operating in line with Consumer Duty principles and Unum's values and standards.

What will you bring?
We're looking for someone who enjoys helping customers, pays close attention to detail and is motivated to build their career within a professional services environment.
You'll ideally have:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a professional and confident telephone manner.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work accurately when handling sensitive and confidential information.
- Good numerical and analytical skills.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
- Confidence using technology and learning new systems, particularly bespoke software and digital tools.
- An interest in how AI and emerging technologies can improve ways of working and customer service.
- A self-motivated approach, with the ability to work independently and make sound decisions within established guidelines.
- A collaborative mindset and willingness to learn from coaching, feedback and experience.
- A genuine desire to provide excellent customer service with empathy and professionalism.
- Degree educated is preferred but not essential.
- A degree in Biology, Life Sciences, Health Sciences or a related scientific discipline would be particularly beneficial.
- A-level qualifications, or equivalent.
- Previous administrative, customer service or office-based experience would be advantageous but isn't essential.
- An interest in insurance, healthcare, financial services or risk-based decision making.
- The ability to learn new concepts quickly and apply them accurately in a regulated environment.
Location
Hybrid working. 3 days in Dorking office, 2 days from home.
