Wade Construction are looking for an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our team based at our head office in Lichfield, Staffs. The successful applicant will join a team working on data centre projects in Europe with package values in excess of £1m to £50m, along with smaller UK projects. Occasional working / staying away from home will be required.
You will demonstrate broad commercial skills and a strong background, whilst understanding the commercial drivers, risk profiles and key success factors for Clients procuring construction/civils works. Responsible for supporting the company in achieving service excellence and positive outcomes; you will be able to show high levels of technical capability, sound commercial knowledge and a good understanding of the key drivers of cost and value; capturing and sharing knowledge and driving innovation in service.
The main role will involve heading up the commercial department and also includes pre and post contract Quantity Surveying activities for construction works ranging from £1k to £50m+. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day activities and liaising with directors, commercial managers, quantity surveyors, clients and subcontractors with regard to tender response preparation, post contract costing, measuring and valuing works, along with final accounts.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Estimating work value from site visits, drawings, specification, etc.
- Obtaining quotes from subcontractors
- Pricing tender documents
- Site measuring and inspections
- Preparing, negotiating, measuring, valuing and settling and agreeing variations, interim valuations and final accounts with clients / subcontractors
- Attending pre-contract, post contract, site, client, project and inhouse meetings and presentations
- Liaise with clients, architects, project managers, surveyors, clients, suppliers, subcontractors and trades
- Cost control to ensure margins are being maintained through project progression
- Reviewing subcontractor base to ensure that best value is achieved
- Producing billing information and agreeing approval for payment of suppliers
- Pre-project cashflow planning and on-site cost monitoring
- Daily liaison and communication with subcontractors and operatives including verifying tender inclusion / compliance with requirements, negotiating costs, accounts, logistical arrangements, resolutions of project cost issues and day to day operations
- Promote and increase company profile
- Submission and agreement of extension of time / loss and expense claims
- Management of project cost ledgers and budget projections
- Maintain positive monthly cashflow
- Managing multiple projects across different countries at once
- Preparation and issuing detailed financial reports, i.e. budget monitoring, monthly cost and value, etc.
- Preparation and valuation of works (on site and from drawings) for valuations, variations and final accounts, including occasionally attending sites in Europe
- Production of schedules, bills of quantities, etc.
- Assessing and identification of risks
- Attend pre appointment meetings to ensure prospective subcontractors are fully compliant with project requirements
- Management of variations from client - ensuring all additional works are correctly recorded in line with the contract and adequate records are maintained on site to ensure the full revenue recovery
- Assisting the construction team to ensure the effective management of all projects under your control are carried out in accordance with client requirements, current legislation and industry standards
- Always present in a professional manner
- Preparation and issue of contractual letters and documentation to clients and sub-contractors
- Prepare and issue sub-contract enquiries and assessment of quotations upon receipt to allocating work to subcontractors
- Preparation and submission of interim valuations / CVRs and final accounts, including all supporting information for materials on site, variations and measurement
- Be aware and understand the implications of health and safety regulations and the necessity to factor as a cost
- Dispute resolution
Skills / Requirements
We are looking for a passionate, self-motivated individual with a track record in strong leadership and a commitment for delivering excellence. You will have solid experience in working as part of a team and successfully delivering high value projects. You will need the appropriate educational qualifications such as a HND or degree in Quantity Surveying.
The successful applicant will be adaptable to the various project demands and capable of working to and achieving targets. An ability to report on the current and forecast cost and profit and loss position of the project and an ability to control and forecast costs is essential.

- HND / Bachelor's Quantity Surveying or similar qualification
