Purpose of Post
The Family Money Management Adviser (Family MMA) will deliver a targeted, holistic advice and support service to families experiencing financial hardship, with a particular focus on those at risk of poverty, debt, and food insecurity.
The role will work proactively to improve financial resilience, maximise income, and strengthen money management skills for families, particularly those eligible for Free School Meals and those engaging with local family support systems.
The service will operate in close partnership with Family Hubs, schools, Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) providers, and a wide range of voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations, ensuring coordinated and accessible support for families.
This role supports the objectives of the Crisis and Resilience Fund (CRF) by:
- Increasing household income and financial stability
- Preventing escalation of financial crisis through early intervention
- Strengthening long-term resilience for families
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Advice and Casework
- Provide high-quality, client-centred advice up to generalist level, including:
- Welfare benefits and income maximisation
- Debt and budgeting advice
- Housing and related financial issues
- Support families to claim all benefits and entitlements, particularly those eligible for Free School Meals
- Assist with applications, mandatory reconsiderations, and liaison with third parties where required
- Assess income and expenditure (including use of recognised financial tools) to support debt and financial planning
- Refer complex cases to specialist advisers (debt, housing, welfare benefits) as appropriate
Family-Focused Support and Resilience
- Deliver tailored support to families to improve financial capability and build long-term resilience
- Provide one-to-one coaching and, where appropriate, small group sessions for families
- Identify early signs of crisis (e.g. food insecurity, debt escalation) and intervene promptly
- Support families to access wider support including:
- Household Support Fund schemes
- Grant funds and charitable support
- Food provision and essential items services
Partnership Working and Outreach
- Work closely with:
- Family Hubs
- Schools and education settings
- Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) providers
- VCSE partners and community organisations
- Engage with families in community settings, including outreach in schools, Family Hubs, and partner venues
- Support coordinated pathways into advice services for families identified as at risk
- Contribute to integration of advice services into local family support systems
Coordination with Local Welfare and Resilience Services
- Ensure families are aware of and can access resilience services and wider local welfare provision
- Support alignment with HAF programmes, including signposting and collaboration where appropriate
- Contribute to local strategies to reduce food insecurity and improve financial resilience
Case Management and Administration
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and detailed case records in line with organisational and Citizens Advice requirements
- Record outcomes (financial and non-financial) for monitoring and reporting
- Ensure compliance with data protection, safeguarding, and quality standards
Service Development and Monitoring
- Work collaboratively with internal teams (Debt, Benefits, Research & Campaigns)
- Contribute to monitoring, evaluation, and reporting for funders and partners
- Identify emerging issues affecting families and feed into Research & Campaigns work
- Support continuous improvement of the service
External Networking
- Build and maintain strong relationships with partner organisations
- Represent the service at relevant meetings and forums
- Promote awareness of the service across partner networks
Professional Development
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of welfare benefits, debt, and housing legislation
- Participate in training, supervision, and appraisal processes
- Uphold Citizens Advice values, including equality, diversity, and inclusion
Other Duties
- Adhere to organisational policies including safeguarding, health & safety, and confidentiality
- Undertake outreach and home visits where appropriate

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
Knowledge and Experience
- Experience of delivering generalist advice, including welfare benefits, debt, or housing
- Understanding of the challenges facing families experiencing financial hardship, including poverty and food insecurity
- Awareness of the role of Family Hubs, schools, and community organisations in supporting families
- Knowledge of welfare benefits systems and income maximisation approaches
Skills and Abilities
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with families and partners
- Ability to explain complex information clearly in plain English
- Effective negotiation and advocacy skills
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage a caseload and prioritise work
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Competent IT skills for case recording and reporting
