Role Summary
The Transport Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, performance, and cost control of the transport department. The role combines strategic oversight with hands-on involvement in daily planning to ensure efficient operations & high service levels. The Transport Manager will also support planning activities when required.
Key Responsibilities but not limited to involve
- Lead and manage the transport operation, ensuring all deliveries meet deadlines and customer expectations.
- Work closely with the Transport Planner on daily routing, vehicle allocation, and scheduling.
- Oversee delivery planning decisions, selecting the most cost-effective and suitable transport methods.
- Drive route optimisation and ensure all runs are efficient and commercially viable.
- Ensure full and effective use of our route planning system, maintaining accurate and up-to-date system data.
- Monitor daily delivery performance, resolving issues and ensuring cost-effective completion of outstanding orders.
- Maintain involvement in key or complex customer deliveries when required.
- Ensure fair and consistent allocation of work across the driving team.
- Coordinate closely with the warehouse to align workloads and maintain operational flow.
- Oversee backorders, reporting, and performance analysis to support continuous improvement.
- Manage external transport providers, including performance and cost control.
Fleet, Driver & Compliance
- Lead, manage, and develop drivers to maintain high standards of performance and professionalism.
- Monitor fleet performance using our telematics systems, identifying trends and improvements.
- Ensure compliance with all legal requirements, including tachographs, vehicle regulations, and Clean Air Zones.
- Promote health and safety standards, including vehicle checks, cleanliness, and safe driving practices.
- Manage vehicle maintenance, servicing, MOTs, and repairs in line with operational needs.
- Oversee driver holidays, training, and resource planning to ensure full operational coverage.
- Track vehicle issues, damages, and costs, implementing improvements where necessary.
- Maintain accurate records across drivers, vehicles, and compliance requirements.
Skills and Experience
- Proven experience in a transport management/operational role within transport or logistics
- Strong knowledge of transport regulations, compliance and health & safety requirements
- Excellent organisational and time management skills
- Strong leadership and communication abilities
- Proficient in transport management systems and Microsoft Office
- Experience in developing teams and maximizing their strengths.
- CPC Holder
10 hours per day inc lunches - Hours between 5:30am and 6pm
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: £35,000.00-£40,000.00 per year
