Four-day week. Every week.
Walker Rubber is looking for a Factory Operative to join our team in Norwich. We are a small, hardworking, straight-talking business — we say what we mean, we get on with it, and everyone here matters.
You do not need experience in rubber. We will train you properly. What you do need is the right attitude.
Starting Wage: £12.71 per hour
Hours: Monday to Thursday, 07:30–17:00 (some flexibility to work Tuesday to Friday when capacity requires or when it is a bank holiday)
Location: Norwich (NR3)
What we do
Walker Rubber manufactures and supplies industrial rubber products. We work across a wide range of industry sectors, solving engineering problems with rubber — extrusions, mouldings and gaskets, made bespoke and turned around exceptionally fast. Founded in 1941, we are growing, and we have recently expanded our Norwich site.
What you'll be doing
No two days are identical. You'll be trained across all of it:
Goods in and out
- Unloading and unpacking supplier deliveries, booking them onto our system
- Picking customer orders from stock
- Wrapping and packing orders, weighing parcels and selecting the most cost-effective delivery method
- Handling customer collections
Cutting and preparing
- Cutting and stripping sheet rubber down from larger rolls
- Creating 2D drawings on the computer for our CNC cutter
- Calculating material requirements and nesting parts to minimise waste
- Setting and running the machinery that cuts 2D shapes from sheet
- Cutting and drilling extruded rubber
Moulding and extrusion
- Setting and running presses to mould rubber into 3D shapes
- Setting and running extrusion lines
- Bonding rubbers together, or to customer-supplied parts, using adhesives and tape
Keeping the place right
- Site housekeeping
- Daily team meetings
What you need
- Fluent in written and spoken English to work from engineering drawings, written work instructions and safety information
- Confident with everyday computer tasks
- Comfortable with practical maths — units of measure, and converting between imperial and metric for length and weight
- Able to use a tape measure and read an engineering drawing
- A can-do attitude, working at pace without losing care and attention to detail
- Preferred - Previous factory experience so you can hit the ground running
This is an active, hands-on role. You'll be on your feet, moving and lifting materials for most of the day.
What we offer
- A four-day working week, Monday to Thursday, 07:30–17:00 (except bank holiday weeks. Flexibility for varying week to Tuesday to Friday when required)
- 22.5 days of holiday (less our Christmas shutdown)
- Full, structured training — we teach you the trade
- A genuine say in how things are done. Small team, no hiding places, no politics.
How to apply
- Apply through Indeed, ideally with a cover letter
- A 10-minute phone call, to see if the fit is right both ways
- A visit to us: 60-minute written assessment, factory tour, and a 30-minute interview
- A half-day trial, 07:30–12:00, so you can see the job and we can see you
If you've read this far and it sounds like you, we'd like to hear from you.
