A Personal Support Assistant is required : Starting with 12 hours a week. Probably 3 support sessions of 4 hours, during the day on weekdays and weekends – possibly some evenings. Happy to be flexible and structure hours differently on discussion.
Who: An 80-year-old, youthful, active married man with a strong sense of fun. He lives with dementia and needs a lot of help to keep living his life his way. Likes to keep busy. Enjoys doing things like helping others, travel, real ale, watching sport, playing golf, walking, live music and having a laugh with people. Not a dog lover.
We are looking for: a patient, supportive, skilled person who really understands dementia and is happy to help with whatever is needed (including some personal care). Someone who doesn’t present themselves as a traditional ‘carer’. A positive, friendly, people person with energy and initiative. Someone honest with real integrity who values everyone equally. An outward looking, curious person with varied life experiences. Can be male or female. Must be willing to go places – a driver with a car they are willing and able to use or someone who is up for travel on public transport.
What we would like them to do:
- Build a real relationship based on mutual respect
- Support the gentleman at home and out and about
- Work with him (and his family) to come up with ideas of things to do and places to go. Make practical arrangements as needed
- Assess and manage risk
- Accompany, guide and practically help P without controlling or patronising
- Spend time with him to enable family to go out and/or away
