Purpose of the Role
To lead and develop RSPCA Cornwall Branch’s Newquay retail shop while also establishing and managing a growing online sales presence through platforms such as eBay, Vinted, and Facebook Marketplace. This dual-focus role will play a key part in the branch’s income generation strategy and will ensure that surplus stock, specialist donations, and other goods are optimised for income both in-store and online.
You will also support and motivate a team of volunteers, deliver excellent customer service, and contribute to increasing the visibility of the RSPCA Cornwall brand in the local community and online.
Key Responsibilities
Retail Shop Management (3 Days per Week including weekends)
- Manage all aspects of the Newquay shop, ensuring smooth daily operations in line with legal, safety, and branch standards.
- Achieve and exceed sales targets and ensure effective control of direct costs.
- Maintain high standards of visual merchandising, cleanliness, and stock rotation.
- Lead on in-shop promotions, seasonal displays, and RSPCA campaign integration.
- Maintain accurate financial records, complete banking and reconciliation tasks, and follow branch cash handling policies.
- Assume responsibility for keyholding and premises management, including health and safety compliance and reporting maintenance issues.
Online Sales & Stock Coordination (2 Days per Week at Centre)
- Sort, select, and catalogue high-value or suitable items for online sale from donations.
- Photograph and list items for sale on chosen platforms (e.g. eBay, Vinted, Facebook Marketplace).
- Manage online queries, packaging, postage and returns.
- Liaise with the Development Manager to align online strategy with campaign themes and supporter engagement.
- Organise the stock room and donation intake process at the centre to streamline the flow of goods between shop, centre, and online.
Volunteer and Team Development
- Recruit, train and support a strong team of volunteers across both the shop and centre-based stock functions.
- Provide clear guidance, support and positive supervision to volunteers, ensuring a safe and inclusive working environment.
- Create volunteer rotas and ensure adequate cover for both shop and online activity.
Income Generation & Promotion
- Work closely with the Development Manager to identify opportunities for local promotion and partnerships that support shop and online growth.
- Promote the shop and online store in the local community using posters, social media, and word-of-mouth.
- Collaborate with the Communications Officer to amplify impact stories and sales campaigns through digital channels.
Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting
- Maintain stock movement records and sales data to support reporting and analysis.
- Identify opportunities for improving profitability, customer engagement and operational efficiency.
- Provide monthly updates to the Development Manager on income targets, volunteer activity and resource needs.
Conditions of Employment
- Based across the Newquay shop and RSPCA Cornwall Branch Animal Centre.
- 40 hours per week, including regular weekends.
- All staff must comply with health and safety policies and complete any mandatory training.
Person Specification Criteria
Essential
Retail or charity shop management experience
Experience with online selling platforms (eBay, Vinted, etc.)
Excellent organisational and time management skills
Strong customer service and communication abilities
Experience managing volunteers or staff teams
Ability to use Microsoft Office and basic digital tools
Understanding of stock control and income reporting
Driving licence and ability to travel between sites
Desirable
Visual merchandising skills
