Private Housekeeper / Household Assistant

A little more than housekeeping…
An exciting opportunity for an experienced Private Housekeeper / Household Assistant to become a trusted and valued part of a family household, supporting two homes in the Retford area.
This is a varied role for someone who takes real pride in creating a beautiful, clean and well-organised home. As well as high-standard housekeeping, you’ll be involved in laundry and ironing, meal preparation, shopping, organising, household errands and helping with the smooth day-to-day running of the homes.
We’re looking for someone who doesn’t need to be told what needs doing. Once you understand the family’s routines, you’ll have the trust and autonomy to manage your time, spot jobs that need attention and simply get on with them.
What you’ll be doing
Your responsibilities will include:
- Cleaning and tidying both homes to a high standard
- Laundry, ironing, folding and putting clothes away
- Changing beds and managing household linen
- Decluttering and organising wardrobes, cupboards, drawers, children’s belongings and storage areas
- Grocery shopping and keeping household essentials stocked
- Preparing straightforward, good-quality home-cooked meals
- Keeping kitchens, fridges and cupboards clean and organised
- Household errands, collections and returns
- Receiving deliveries and providing access to tradespeople when required
- Preparing the homes for guests
- Occasional childcare / babysitting
- Occasional pet care, including feeding and walking
- Generally spotting what needs doing and helping keep both households organised and running efficiently
This is primarily a housekeeping and household management position — not a nanny or pet-care role.
Hours & Pay
15–25 hours per week, ideally across 2–3 days, split between two family homes in and around Retford.
There is flexibility around days and hours for the right person, with the potential for the role to develop over time.
£18–£22 per hour, depending on experience.
For the right long-term candidate, the package could potentially include:

- Someone who enjoys decluttering and creating order
- A competent everyday home cook
- Comfortable around children and animals
- Happy working independently
- Looking for a stable, long-term position
Previous experience as a Private Housekeeper, Household Assistant, Family Assistant, Household Manager, Domestic Housekeeper or working within a private family home would be advantageous.
You may have worked in a large private home, supported a busy family or combined housekeeping with household management or family assistance. We’re more interested in your attitude, reliability, common sense and standards than formal qualifications.
A full driving licence is highly desirable.
A Trusted Position
This is a position where trust, discretion and reliability are incredibly important.
Due to the nature of the role and occasional childcare responsibilities, satisfactory references, right-to-work checks and an appropriate DBS check will be required.
We would initially arrange an informal meeting, followed by a paid trial day or trial period, so that everyone can make sure the arrangement feels right.
