Job title: Gas Heating Engineer - Installations
Location anchor: St Austell PL25 3RF
Multi-location: Plymouth, Camborne/Redruth, Exeter, Torbay, Somerset
Job type: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: £40,000 - £50,000 per year qualification and experience dependant.
Supplemental pay: Overtime can exceed £10,000 per annum.
Family-run heating and cooling since 1980, with a South West office in St Austell.
There's about 80 of us, four trades under one roof, and more than 30,000 customers. 4,800 Trustpilot reviews at 4.8. Last year we won the HPM Award and the West Midlands Energy Efficiency Award for boiler and heating installation. Most of what we do is domestic, but Red Bull Racing, the Royal Collection Trust, David Lloyd and DIY SOS are all on our customer list.
Down here, we're at the beginning of that.
Where you'd actually be working
We cover Cornwall and Devon, which is a big patch, so it's worth being straight about what that means for you.
You don't need to live near St Austell and you won't be starting your day there. The van comes home with you and you go straight to your first job. You'd work your own area, built around where you live rather than around where our office is.
There is travel in this job. We're not going to pretend otherwise on a patch this size. What we will say is that it's planned in rather than piled on. Travel time sits inside your working day, and if a job takes you further out than usual it's accounted for before it goes in the diary, not something you absorb.
You'd come into St Austell ocassionally for parts, van checks, team catch-ups and training.
Working your own patch shouldn't mean working on your own. Our team of Engineers and Apprentices led by the regional manager mean that you are always supported and part of a team.
The job
Boiler swaps and full system installs. Gas, oil and renewables. Your own van, straight from home to your first job.
Monday to Friday, 8 til 5. If you need something different from that, say so at interview and we'll have a proper conversation about it as part of our flexible working arrangements.
What you get
£40,000 - £50,000 basic (exact salary dependant on qualification and skill, £40,000 is not the starting point). Overtime on top.
Private healthcare, and this is the bit worth reading properly. It covers pre-existing conditions, and it covers your wife or husband and your children as well. Huge gym discounts with Nuffield and Hussle Gyms too! Most schemes in this trade won't touch anything you've already got. Ours will. If you've been on the tools twenty years and your back or your knees are already telling you about it, that's the difference between cover that's worth something and cover that isn't.
The rest of it:
- EV salary sacrifice car scheme through Octopus, servicing and maintenance included. That's for a family car if you want one, the van's separate
- A Tools Down day every year, your birthday off, and you can buy extra holiday if you want more
- Van, fuel card, phone, mobile allowance and uniform
- All ACS renewals and further tickets paid for
- Gym membership discounts, employee assistance programme, salary sacrifice pension
- Team days and corporate events.
What you'll need
- Gas Safe registered
- ACS: CCN1 and CENWAT are essential. CEN1, CKR1, HTR1 and CPA1 would be good
- NVQ2 or a recognised apprenticeship
- Three years working on installs on your own
- Full UK driving licence
- OFTEC, LPG and G3 Unvented are useful but we won't rule you out without them
What we're building down here
Up in the Midlands, roughly one house in three in Rugby is a Custom Heat customer. It took forty-odd years to get there. The part worth knowing is that we've built regional success already. Chris joined us in 2007 as a service engineer; he's Operations Director now. Tom started in 2013 as a first-year apprentice while retraining at evening college, and runs service and repair. Darren has been here since 1996, and for his 25 years we gave him a family holiday and two extra weeks' paid leave.
We won't pretend everybody stays that long. But some do, and none of them stood still while they did.
Being 250 miles from head office doesn't mean you get less of us. Alongside your Gas Safe you can pick up OFTEC, F Gas, LPG, Solar PV, air source and ground source heat pumps, electrical wiring for heating systems, commercial servicing and installation, and a Level 3 Management and Leadership apprenticeship if you want to move that way. We pay for it and we cover travel and accommodation for training up-country. You also get an annual development review that's a real conversation about what you want next, not a form.
If you're a good engineer ready for your next challenge, perhaps want to join a team as it grows, or to enhance your skills in Air Conditioning, Renewables, Electrics, we think we're the company for you.
