Shift Supervisor
Redmans of Preston, Preston Market Permanent role, usually 4 days per week (approximately 34-36 hours) £13.25 to £13.75 per hour, depending on experience
About Us
Redmans of Preston is a family-owned business in the heart of Preston Market, serving the community since 1945. Originally starting out as a local egg seller, we've grown over the years to become a reliable, quality-driven deli offering a range of freshly prepared food and provisions. Our dedicated team works together to provide excellent service and delicious affordable meals that keep our customers coming back.
We take pride in our broad menu, from tailor-made sandwiches and hot food to a selection of pies, cakes, cold meats and preserves as well as a small butcher's counter. At Redmans we're committed to quality, affordability and a welcoming atmosphere for our customers and our team alike.
The Role
We're recruiting a Shift Supervisor to work alongside our existing Shift Supervisor and help run the shop day-to-day. The role is mostly front of house, on the counter and serving customersand supporting the team. Over time you'll also be trained across other areas of the business, including the kitchen, giving you a full understanding of how the operation works and allowing you to support the team wherever required.
On top of your normal duties you'll open up, close down and act as the senior person in charge when the owners aren't around. That means keeping an eye on standards, sorting out deliveries and making sure procedures are actually followed, not just when the owners are watching.
This role would suit someone who enjoys taking ownership, spotting problems before they become issues and helping shape how a growing independent business operates day-to-day.
Key Responsibilities
- Opening up and getting the shop ready before trade
- Closing down, completing end of day checks and cashing up
- Keeping to time, opening, closing and handovers happening when they should, with no unnecessary overruns
- Keeping on top of food safety, hygiene, date labelling and stock rotation
- Checking deliveries against orders, identifying shortages, quality issues or substitutions and rejecting anything that isn't right
- Keeping an eye on stock levels and minimising waste
- Coordinating the team during your shift and making sure procedures are followed
- Acting as senior person on duty, making day to day decisions and escalating anything bigger
What This Role Is (and Isn't)
This is a senior operational role, not a management role in the formal sense. You won't be responsible for hiring, firing or formal discipline, those stay with the owners. Your authority is over the shift itself, the standards and how the day runs, and you'll have the backing of the wider team rather than being left to sort everything out alone.
You'll work alongside our existing Shift Supervisor on Saturdays, our busiest trading day, and be trusted to run your remaining shifts independently.
What We're Looking For
- Experience in a supervisory, shift running or keyholder role, ideally in hospitality or retail
- Comfortable taking ownership of standards even when it's busy or under pressure
- Willing to challenge poor standards and ensure procedures are followed consistently
- Good food safety and hygiene knowledge (training and certification provided if needed)
- Mainly happy working front of house, but willing to learn kitchen tasks too
- Clear, calm communication and confidence directing a small team
- Reliable and trustworthy, this role comes with keyholder responsibility
Working Hours
Usually 4 days a week. At the moment that's likely to be Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, but days aren't fixed and may change from week to week to cover holidays, sickness or business needs.
Typical shift hours are approximately 7:00am – 3:30pm, with Friday and Saturday usually finishing slightly later.
Benefits
- Free lunch every shift
- Staff discount on food and drink
- Food safety training and certification provided
- Opportunity to complete formal management training and develop into a more senior operational role
- A genuine opportunity to play a key part in the future development of the business
