About The Role
We are looking for a reliable and hands-on Shift Engineer to join the Maintenance team at The Derby London City. In this role, you will support the Chief Engineer and Senior Shift Engineer in ensuring the hotel operates safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards across all guest and back-of-house areas. From responding to maintenance requests to carrying out preventative works, you will play a key part in delivering a smooth guest experience while helping to protect the hotel’s assets and support our sustainability goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out reactive and planned maintenance across guest rooms, public areas, plant rooms, and back-of-house facilities.
- Respond promptly and professionally to maintenance requests and emergency situations, working closely with other departments.
- Follow all Health Safety, fire safety, COSHH, and company procedures, using appropriate PPE at all times.
- Complete scheduled preventative maintenance tasks and daily plant room checks.
- Keep accurate maintenance records and handover notes for the next shift
- Support energy conservation initiatives and environmentally responsible practices.
- Reduce external call-outs and repair costs through effective in-house maintenance.
- Provide a calm, guest-focused approach when working in occupied areas of the hotel.
Key Skills
- Strong technical aptitude with a practical, solution-focused mindset.
- Good knowledge of building services including basic HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general maintenance.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent time management, organisation, and attention to detail.
- Confident communicator with a professional and courteous manner.
- Sound understanding of Health Safety and fire life safety procedures.
- Basic IT skills (knowledge of BMS and fire alarm systems is an advantage).
About you
- You have previous experience as a Shift Engineer, Maintenance Assistant or in a similar maintenance role.
- Previous hotel experience is a plus.
- You are proactive, dependable, and take pride in delivering high standards of work.
- You remain calm under pressure and enjoy solving problems efficiently.
- You are flexible, organised, and detail oriented.
- You bring a positive, team-oriented attitude and enjoy supporting others across the hotel.
- You are motivated to contribute to cost control, energy efficiency, and continuous improvement.
