With around 31,000 students from over 100 countries, Birmingham City University is a large, diverse and forward looking institution rooted in the heart of Birmingham. We put students at the centre of everything we do, combining technical, creative and professional excellence with strong industry links to give our learners the best opportunities for future success. Guided by our 2030 strategy, we are committed to promoting fairness, innovation and real world impact across our academic community.
We are seeking to recruit a pool of Visiting Lecturers who can contribute to our Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes across our academic Schools.
Join our Visiting Lecturer Pool for our School of Architecture, Built Environment, Computing, and Engineering - Department of Architecture and Built Environment
The Department of Architecture and the Built Environment delivers a practice-led portfolio shaped by the needs of the contemporary architecture, construction, design and development sectors. Formed through the convergence of the Birmingham School of Architecture and Design and the College of the Built Environment, the Department represents more than a structural change—it is a bold re-founding of architectural and built environment education.
Our vision is to create a Place of Praxis, where spatial, technical and environmental design are understood as forms of agency. We believe the built environment is never neutral: every drawing, detail, material choice, policy and proposal has ethical, social and environmental consequences. Through teaching that connects research, professional practice and critical inquiry, we encourage students to see design as an instrument for positive social and environmental transformation.
Our courses span:
-
Architecture
-
Architectural Technology
-
Building Surveying
-
Construction Management
-
Quantity Surveying
-
Property Development
Students learn in specialist studio spaces, digital design environments and technical workshops, supported by industry-standard software, modelling technologies and facilities across Millennium Point and our city-centre campus. Strong partnerships with architectural practices, construction firms, surveying consultancies and professional bodies ensure our teaching reflects contemporary industry expectations, evolving regulatory frameworks and sustainable design priorities.
We welcome Visiting Lecturers who can bring current professional expertise, sector insight and practice-informed teaching to our programmes. As part of a forward-looking academic community, you will contribute to teaching that combines technical excellence with critical design thinking, preparing students to engage ethically, creatively and confidently with the evolving built environment professions.
We value intellectually rigorous learning, meaningful engagement with professional practice and an inclusive educational culture that supports student wellbeing alongside academic achievement. Visiting Lecturers play an important role in helping students develop the knowledge, skills and critical perspectives needed to shape a more equitable, sustainable and imaginative built environment.
