Design Engineer

The Design Engineer is responsible for designing and developing innovative products, systems, or components in line with customer specifications, industry standards, and company requirements. This role involves the creation of detailed technical drawings, prototypes, and product specifications, along with ensuring design feasibility, testing, and cost optimisation. The Design Engineer works closely with cross-functional teams, including sales, production, quality assurance, and product management, to deliver high-quality designs that meet both functional and commercial goals.
Key Responsibilities
Product Design and Development:
Create detailed designs and technical specifications for products, systems, or components using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
Conduct design reviews with stakeholders, ensuring that designs meet customer requirements, regulatory standards, and manufacturability.
Make-to-print – capture customer design intent to allow manufacture, inspection, and supply and checking of Make-to-print drawings.
Follow CAD and drawing departmental guidelines.
Prototyping and Testing:
Build and test prototypes to validate design assumptions and functionality.
Analyse test results and make necessary design modifications to improve performance, safety, and reliability.
Conduct failure analysis and troubleshoot design issues.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of all design work, including drawings, models, specifications, and test results in compliance with the QMS.
Prepare and present design reports and updates for management and stakeholders, providing clear documentation of design iterations and final specifications.
Ensure all designs comply with industry standards, safety regulations, environmental guidelines and industry best practices.
Project Management:
Manage design projects from initial concept through to Manufacturing.
Collaboration and communication:
Collaborate with other departments, including procurement and manufacturing, to ensure successful product realisation.
Communicate design concepts clearly through drawings, reports, presentations, and meetings.
Support sales and marketing teams with technical insights for customer-facing materials.
Continuous Improvement:
Identify opportunities for design improvements and cost reduction without compromising quality or performance.
Stay updated on industry trends, technologies, and materials to incorporate innovations into designs.
Key Skills:
HNC/HND engineering qualification – minimum.
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Product Design, Industrial Engineering, or a related field preferred.
Experience in sealing or rotating equipment industry is essential.
Experience in fluid dynamics and mechanical engineering are essential.
Experience working with pressure vessels would be advantageous.
Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA, etc.).
Experience with prototyping, testing, and materials selection.
Familiarity with moulding processes.
Technical: Strong knowledge of engineering principles, mechanics, and polymer materials.
Detail-oriented: a strict focus on engineering quality and efficiency.
Problem-solving: Strong analytical and creative problem solving.
Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts simply.
Teamwork: Ability to work well in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment.
