Senior Estimator / Pre-Construction Manager – Roofing

Shield Southern Ltd is an established and growing roofing contractor working predominantly on new-build residential developments across the South of England.
We are looking for an experienced Senior Estimator / Pre-Construction Manager to take responsibility for our estimating, tendering, contract reviews and the preparation of projects before work starts.
This is a hands-on position for someone with strong construction knowledge who can manage enquiries from receipt of the tender documents through to quotation, contract review and handover to our Contracts Manager and site teams. The successful candidate will also support live projects by pricing variations and dealing with changes to the scope or specification.
Key Responsibilities
- Reviewing drawings, specifications, schedules and tender documents
- Carrying out detailed take-offs and preparing accurate estimates
- Pricing labour, materials, access equipment and subcontractor requirements
- Obtaining and comparing quotations from suppliers and manufacturers
- Preparing and submitting detailed quotations and tenders
- Identifying missing information, inconsistencies and potential risks within tender documents
- Raising tender queries and clarifying requirements with clients
- Reviewing contracts, terms and specifications before projects are accepted
- Highlighting contractual, technical and commercial risks to the directors
- Attending tender, pre-contract and pre-start meetings when required
- Liaising directly with clients, main contractors, suppliers and manufacturers
- Making sure the proposed roofing system meets the specification and manufacturer’s requirements
- Preparing and pricing variations and additional works
- Ensuring variations are supported by written instructions and suitable records
- Keeping accurate records of quotations, drawings, specifications and correspondence
- Preparing clear project handover information for the Contracts Manager and site teams
- Ensuring the required pre-construction and Health & Safety documentation is in place before work starts
- Assisting with RAMS and other project-specific site documentation
- Supporting live projects where the design, specification or customer requirements change
- Managing several tenders and projects at the same time
About You
We are looking for someone with strong practical experience in most of the following areas:
- Construction estimating and tender preparation
- Reading and understanding construction drawings and specifications
- Completing take-offs and preparing detailed quotations
- Pricing labour, materials and subcontractor packages
- Reviewing contracts and identifying potential risks
- Pricing variations and additional works
- Dealing directly with customers regarding technical and project requirements
- Construction Health & Safety, including RAMS and pre-start documentation
- Liaising with suppliers, manufacturers, contracts managers and site teams
- Managing multiple tenders and deadlines
- Maintaining accurate project records and documentation
Previous experience in roofing, building envelopes or working for a specialist subcontractor would be a strong advantage. Experience with new-build residential developments would also be beneficial.
We understand that the right person may not have experience in every area listed. We are happy to provide support where someone has a small gap in their knowledge but already has strong experience across most of the role. However, this is a senior position and would not be suitable for someone who requires extensive training in construction estimating, tendering or contract review.
The successful candidate must be able to work independently, take ownership of their responsibilities and contribute to the role from an early stage.
