Post Office Insurance Job Description
The Head of Motor, Pet, Protection & New Products Insurance is responsible for the commercial performance, product development and in‑life optimisation of POI’s Motor, Pet, Protection & New Products insurance lines. This role is the day‑to‑day commercial owner of these portfolios, ensuring sustained margin improvement, profitable growth, competitive positioning, and delivery of strong customer outcomes in line with Consumer Duty obligations, fair value expectations and conduct risk standards.
The role plays a critical part in executing the Product & Proposition Director’s strategy driving portfolio profitability, strengthening insurer partnerships, identifying new opportunities, and ensuring propositions remain relevant and commercially successful within a competitive market while remaining compliant, accessible and suitable for all target market segments, including vulnerable customers.
The Head of Motor, Pet, Protection & New Products is required to proactively participate in the development and delivery of functional strategy and commercial objectives, always modelling appropriate leadership behaviours and demonstrating a customer first mindset.
Role Accountabilities include:
Commercial Growth & Portfolio Performance
· Own the commercial performance of the Motor, Pet, Protection & new Products portfolios, with accountability for margin improvement, revenue growth, and delivery against plan.
· Work closely with insurer partners to monitor, influence and optimise target loss ratios, ensuring alignment between pricing, underwriting strategies and POI commercial objectives and compliant with POI’s Product Governance & Pricing Frameworks.
· Use MI, pricing insight, and partner performance data to proactively identify underperformance and drive corrective actions.
· Activate commercial levers including benefit redesign, product mix optimisation, channel performance improvements and partner negotiations to strengthen P&L outcomes without compromising customer value and increasing conduct risk.
· Support the Director in annual commercial planning, providing clear analysis, opportunity sizing, and portfolio forecasts.
Product & Proposition Development
New Product Identification, Roadmapping & Delivery
· Identify, assess and validate opportunities for new insurance products aligned to POI’s strategic objectives, commercial ambitions and customer needs.
· Lead the creation and ongoing management of a clear, insight‑driven product roadmap covering new product development, enhancements and innovation opportunities.
· Define target markets for all new propositions, ensuring alignment to commercial strategy, Consumer Duty requirements and POI’s brand position.
· Work cross‑functionally with Marketing, Digital, Operations, Finance, Underwriting, Pricing and Compliance to ensure new product concepts are robust, deliverable, commercially viable and customer‑centric.
· Drive end‑to‑end delivery of new products — from ideation and business casing through development, approval, build, go‑to‑market and in‑life optimisation.
· Ensure all new product development processes include clear commercial sizing, risk assessment, customer outcome testing and governance alignment to secure timely progress through internal approval forums.
· Lead ongoing product improvements across Motor, Pet & Protection ensuring propositions remain competitive, customer‑centric and commercially effective and aligned with Consumer Duty requirements.
· Use research, customer feedback, and market insight to identify opportunities for refreshes, new features or simplification.
· Collaborate with underwriting and actuarial partners to shape commercially attractive product designs and pricing methodologies that follow approved governance processes and avoid foreseeable harm
In-Life Management & Optimisation
· Oversee continual in‑life optimisation, including pricing reviews, cost management, and benefit trade-offs to improve product economics.
· Monitor customer journeys, conversion rates and policy performance, identifying actions to improve acquisition, retention and value delivery.
· Ensure product documentation and customer‑facing content are accurate, competitive, clear and aligned to the proposition’s commercial intent and meet customer understanding standards under Consumer Duty.
Market Insight & Competitor Analysis
· Maintain a deep understanding of market dynamics, competitor strategies and emerging customer trends across all three product categories.
· Use insight to shape product enhancements, pricing strategies and portfolio differentiation ensuring alignment with governance and regulatory expectations.
· Identify new growth opportunities, potential partnerships and white‑space propositions.
Insurer & Partner Relationship Management
· Act as the primary commercial interface with insurers for the Motor, Pet, Protection & New products portfolios.
· Manage partner performance through joint business plans, quarterly performance reviews and commercial negotiations ensuring insurer MI meets POI standards for Consumer Duty and fair value testing.
· Influence insurer pricing and underwriting decisions to drive improvements in loss ratios and product competitiveness while ensuring all changes adhere to Product Governance standards and avoid any conflict with customer outcomes
Governance, Consumer Duty & Value Assurance
· Work in close partnership with the Head of Product Governance to ensure robust oversight of all governance, fair value and Consumer Duty requirements across the Motor, Pet, Protection & New Products portfolios.
· Support the delivery of high‑quality product reviews, fair value assessments and outcome testing, providing strong commercial insight and portfolio‑specific recommendations.
· Ensure product documentation, target market statements and customer journeys align to governance expectations ( including explicit consideration of vulnerable customers, foreseeable harm prevention and fair value evidence) while remaining commercially effective and competitively positioned.
· Prepare clear and commercially focused inputs into product governance committees, working jointly with the Product Governance function to ensure consistent standards and end‑to‑end assurance.
· Embed Consumer Duty principles into decision‑making, proposition design and in‑life optimisation, ensuring that commercial outcomes and customer outcomes remain balanced and well‑evidenced.
Cross‑Functional Leadership
· Work collaboratively with Marketing, Digital, Retail, Operations and Compliance to bring propositions to market effectively and deliver strong end‑to‑end outcomes with proactive risk identification, mitigation and early engagement in risk committees.
· Deputise for the Product & Proposition Director when required, representing the Motor, Pet, Protection & New Products in senior forums.
Knowledge, Experience & Skills
· Commercial & Analytical Strength — able to interpret MI, loss ratios, pricing outputs and commercial data to drive portfolio profit and fair value assurance.
· P&L Mindset — understands financial levers of insurance products and manages portfolios with a margin-first philosophy balanced with customer fairness and Consumer Duty obligations.
· Strong Negotiator — able to influence underwriters and insurers to align pricing, performance and commercial outcomes without compromising value for customers.

Experience and Qualifications
· Strong product, proposition or commercial experience within General Insurance (ideally Motor, Pet, Protection & New Products).
· Proven track record of improving product performance, margins and commercial outcomes.
· Experience working closely with insurers, underwriters and actuarial teams.
· Strong understanding of FCA product governance, fair value and Consumer Duty requirements with practical experience contributing to product reviews and outcome assessments
· Experience managing product enhancements and in‑life optimisation cycles.
· Relevant qualifications preferred (e.g., ACII, product management certification).
Pay: £95,000.00-£110,000.00 per year
