Substance Misuse Nurse – Drug & Alcohol Service (Community Role)
Location: St Helens, Cheshire
Pay: £33 per hour Umbrella
Contract: 3-month block booking (with potential extension)
Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week (Monday–Friday)

Sanctuary Personnel is recruiting for an experienced Substance Misuse Nurse to join a busy community drug and alcohol service in the St Helens area. This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated NMC registered nurse with strong experience in addiction, recovery, and harm reduction to step into a varied and rewarding clinical role within a multidisciplinary team.
About the Role
You will play a key part in delivering high-quality clinical interventions for individuals experiencing substance misuse issues, supporting recovery journeys through assessment, treatment planning, and ongoing care coordination.
Working within a specialist service, you will be responsible for delivering evidence-based interventions across alcohol and opioid dependency, contributing to safe detoxification pathways and supporting community-based recovery models.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out comprehensive physical and mental health assessments for service users
- Support alcohol and opioid detoxification programmes within community settings
- Assist with opioid substitution therapy (OST) titration and monitoring
- Undertake phlebotomy and interpret blood results to support clinical decision-making
- Provide BBV screening, vaccinations, and health promotion advice
- Deliver harm reduction interventions including Naloxone training and distribution
- Support wound care assessments and basic clinical treatment where required
- Contribute to risk assessments and safeguarding practices
- Maintain accurate clinical records and ensure timely reporting and data entry
- Work collaboratively with GPs, hospitals, pharmacies, and multidisciplinary teams
What We’re Looking For
- Current NMC registration (RGN or equivalent)
- Previous experience within drug and alcohol services / substance misuse nursing
- Strong understanding of harm reduction, recovery models, and addiction treatment pathways
- Experience in community nursing, detox support, or mental health/addictions services
- Phlebotomy skills (desirable)
- Confident communicator with the ability to build therapeutic relationships
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
