We're looking for an enthusiastic, personable Tour Guide to bring the history and hidden stories of York to life for visitors from all over the world. York is one of the UK's most historic cities — from Roman roots and Viking heritage to medieval streets and Georgian architecture — and we want someone who can share that story with warmth, confidence, and a bit of showmanship.
You'll be trained on a specific tour route and script, so previous experience as a tour guide isn't essential — what matters most is your ability to engage an audience, think on your feet, and represent our company brilliantly.
Tours may include (subject to final confirmation):
- Walking tours of York's historic city centre and the Shambles
- York Minster and surrounding cathedral quarter
- City walls and Roman/medieval history tours
- Ghost walks and York's "most haunted" folklore tours
- Viking and Jorvik heritage tours
- Harry Potter Themed Tours
What You'll Be Doing
- Delivering engaging, informative, and entertaining tours to groups of visitors
- Learning and confidently presenting an assigned tour route, script, and key historical content
- Adapting your delivery for different audiences (families, international visitors, school groups, etc.)
- Managing group logistics — timings, safety, weather contingencies, and accessibility needs
- Answering visitor questions and offering local recommendations
- Representing the company professionally at all times, including appearance and punctuality
- Collecting feedback and helping improve the tour experience
What We're Looking For
- Excellent communication and public speaking skills
- A genuine interest in history, storytelling, and York's heritage
- Confidence leading groups of strangers, indoors and outdoors, in all weather
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong sense of responsibility for visitor safety
- Comfortable walking/standing for extended periods
- A friendly, approachable, and adaptable personality
- Previous customer-facing, hospitality, acting, teaching, or guiding experience is a plus but not required
- Full training on the specific tour content will be provided
What We Offer
- Full training on your assigned tour route and content
- Ongoing support and opportunities to learn additional tours over time
- Flexible scheduling (adjust as applicable)
- A fun, sociable working environment in one of the UK's most beautiful cities
- Tips and commission and other incentives on top of your standard rate.
