Who we are
We are a small firm of Architects based in Dedham, near Colchester. Our practice specialises in new buildings and conservation of historic buildings with many completed projects in the UK and abroad. The diverse portfolio includes new houses, alterations and extensions, furniture, gardens, follies, pools, agricultural buildings and cartlodges.
Rodney Black Design Studios has won numerous awards, including those from the RIBA, awards for craftsmanship and international superyacht awards.
The practice has also recently established a publishing house, RBDS Publications, and a gallery currently exhibiting paintings by Rodney Black and Philippa Dow.
The Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic Part 1 architectural assistant to join our small, friendly team in Dedham, Essex. This is an opportunity to gain valuable experience working on a broad spread of RIBA work stages to develop the successful candidate’s professional skills. The successful candidate will be mentored throughout the duration of the role alongside the director’s assistance with the PEDR process.
Responsibilities:
- Design Development: Assist in the development of design concepts and presentations, utilising various media to communicate ideas effectively.
- Documentation: Prepare architectural drawings, models, and specifications, ensuring accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
- Project Support: Work alongside senior staff and multidisciplinary teams throughout a range of RIBA work stages, from initial concept to project completion.
- Site Visits: Participate in site surveys and inspections, documenting findings and assisting in the coordination of project activities.
- Communication: Liaise with clients, contractors, and consultants to facilitate project progress.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Educational Background: A degree in architecture with RIBA Part 1 qualification.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in CAD software (the main office software is AutoCAD LT) and familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite for design presentations.
- Interpersonal Skills: Strong communication and teamwork abilities, with a proactive approach to problem-solving and collaboration.
- Organisational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively, demonstrating attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
What We Offer

- Office hours 9am until 5:30pm with one hour for lunch during which we have a sketching club and a running club.
