Job Overview
We are seeking a hardworking and reliable Grounds Maintenance Labourer to join our team and help maintain the high standards of our grounds, gardens, and public areas. This is a hands-on outdoor role, ideal for someone who enjoys working in all weather conditions and takes pride in creating a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for visitors.
The successful candidate will carry out a variety of grounds maintenance tasks including grass cutting, garden maintenance, pathway upkeep, litter clearance, planting, and general estate maintenance. You will work as part of the Gardening Team to ensure the estate remains attractive, well-presented, and safe throughout the year.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out day-to-day grounds maintenance across the estate, ensuring all public and landscaped areas are maintained to a high standard.
- Cut grass using pedestrian mowers and other appropriate equipment.
- Strim grass edges, around trees, fences, and landscaped features.
- Maintain public pathways by clearing vegetation, debris, and overgrown areas to ensure they remain safe and accessible.
- Sweep and clear fallen leaves, collect litter, and remove waste from grounds and visitor areas.
- Weed flower beds, borders, shrub beds, and hard landscaped areas.
- Assist with digging, planting, mulching, seasonal bedding displays, and basic pruning of shrubs and small trees.
- Carry out routine landscape maintenance including mowing, trimming, edging, watering, and general garden care.
- Operate a range of hand and power tools, including push mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and other grounds maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
- Use hand tools for planting, digging, edging, fencing, and general landscaping activities.
- Assist with the maintenance and basic repair of irrigation systems where required.
- Support larger landscaping or improvement projects and, where appropriately trained, operate machinery such as mini excavators or other mechanical equipment.
- Carry out routine inspections of the grounds, identifying maintenance issues or health and safety concerns and reporting these to the Head Gardener.
- Assist with general estate maintenance including debris removal, fencing repairs, painting, and minor construction or maintenance works as required.
- Ensure all equipment is cleaned, maintained, and stored correctly after use.
- Follow all Health & Safety procedures and wear the appropriate PPE at all times.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain the estate to the highest possible standard.
Person Specification
Essential
- A positive attitude and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Good level of physical fitness with the ability to undertake manual work, including lifting, bending, walking, and standing for prolonged periods.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Strong awareness of health and safety practices.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to manage workload effectively.
Desirable
- Previous experience in grounds maintenance, gardening, landscaping, horticulture, or estate maintenance.
- Experience operating pedestrian mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and other grounds maintenance equipment.
- Basic mechanical knowledge and the ability to carry out routine maintenance on tools and machinery.
- Experience with irrigation systems or basic repairs.
- Experience operating machinery such as mini excavators or other landscaping equipment (training/certification desirable).
- Knowledge of planting, pruning, weed control, and seasonal garden maintenance.
- Experience in fencing, minor construction, or general estate maintenance would be advantageous.
