The opportunity
You will play a senior technical role in the development of wearable sensing hardware and embedded AI for human-centred industrial applications. The role focuses on industrial-grade surface electromyography sensors, multimodal AI, and adaptive human–machine interfaces designed to improve worker safety, wellbeing, and productivity in real manufacturing environments.
You will lead technical contributions to wearable hardware and embedded AI workstreams, with a strong focus on the design and validation of robust, low-latency wireless data transmission for multi-device shopfloor deployment. You will also support the optimisation and embedded deployment of real-time gesture recognition models, and contribute to the field validation of complete wristband prototypes.
This post is fixed term for 2 years. Interviews are expected to take place mid-August.
About you
We are seeking a senior, self-directed researcher with strong expertise in wearable electronics, biosensor hardware, embedded systems, and wireless communication. You will be expected to take technical ownership of a hardware-focused workstream, from specification and design through to prototyping, testing, validation, and delivery.
The role is centred on wearable electronics hardware and embedded systems. You will focus primarily on sensor and circuit design, low-noise signal acquisition, embedded firmware, power management, wireless data transmission, hardware integration, and on-device AI deployment.
You will have
A PhD (or near completion, or equivalent industrial research experience) in Electronic Engineering, Embedded Systems, Biomedical Engineering or a closely related discipline
Substantial practical experience designing and prototyping wearable electronics or biosensor platforms (e.g. sEMG, ECG, EEG, IMU or comparable physiological sensing)
Strong embedded firmware development skills (C / C++ on ARM Cortex M class microcontrollers, RTOS, on device signal processing) and hands on experience with one or more wireless protocols suitable for wearable streaming (BLE 5.x, UWB, Wi Fi 6, Thread)
A demonstrable track record of independently delivering technical milestones on collaborative projects, including formal written deliverables, with strong organisational skills, excellent time management, and a proactive, detail oriented approach to your work.
You will also demonstrate creativity in problem solving, strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to prioritise tasks to meet project deadlines in a multi partner international setting.

If you are still awaiting your PhD to be awarded you will be appointed at Grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that you have been awarded your PhD, your salary will be increased to Grade 7, spine point 31.
