We are seeking to recruit Consultant Anaesthetists to join our department at Hammersmith Hospital.
The Hammersmith Hospital provides complex cancer surgical services in the areas of gynaecology, endocrine, hepatobiliary and upper GI specialties and is a regional and national referral centre for these specialities. The Hammersmith Hospital is also a busy kidney and pancreas-kidney transplant centre. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to deliver peri-operative care to patients undergoing these complex and challenging procedures. This will include a fortnightly pre-assessment clinic for patients with renal failure who require surgery as well as assessment of complex patients being considered for kidney transplantation.
In addition to cancer cases, the Hammersmith Hospital is home to the West London Renal and Transplant Centre and performs around 200 kidney transplants per year. The successful candidate will participate in a fortnightly pre-assessment clinic for patients with chronic renal failure prior to undergoing surgery, and this will include assessment of high-risk, borderline cases being considered for activation on the kidney transplant waiting list.
The Hammersmith Hospital is also a cardiothoracic surgical centre, but the successful applicant will not be expected to deliver anaesthesia for open cardiac surgery. However, there is an expanding workload of electro-physiology procedures, and there will be opportunities to deliver sessions in these areas
The initial contract will be for 10 programmes activities (PAs) as described in the 2003 consultant contract. These activities will be split between direct clinical care (DCC) and supporting professional activities (SPA).
Of the direct clinical care commitment, 7.5 PAs will be for elective scheduled work and 1 PA will be for the on call commitment. The successful applicant may have the opportunity to offer to work additional DCC PAs per week but this will be subject to the service requirements of the department.
The post will include one day a week undertaking orthopaedic and plastic trauma surgery at St Mary’s Hospital, one of the four London Major Trauma Centres. These lists will provide ample opportunity to perform a variety of regional anaesthetic techniques.
The initial SPA allocation will be 1.5 per week (6 hours). SPA time is given to support continuing professional development, teaching, clinical governance and preparation for appraisal.
The post includes a 1:8 on call component at Hammersmith Hospital which covers general emergencies in theatres. This is mostly kidney transplants, benign gynaecology and re-operation for surgical complications. There is a separate on call consultant covering cardiac and thoracic emergencies including cath lab emergencies. There is a resident anaesthetic registrar (ST4-7 level) and CT2/3 covering theatres out of hours.

We are looking for motivated candidates interested in anaesthesia for major general surgery and peri-operative medicine. The successful applicant will cover major general surgery lists which include hepatobiliary, upper GI, endocrine and major gynae-oncology surgery. The post will also include one day per week at St Mary’s Hospital undertaking anaesthesia for orthopaedic and plastics trauma surgery.
The successful applicant will become part of our busy department. The workload demands a flexible and responsive service to both emergency and elective work within the operating theatre environment.
In addition to a broad range of both elective and emergency clinical work, the post-holder will have ample opportunity to be involved in research, teaching and training, governance and leadership opportunities, as well as QI projects.
