What to expect
Our application process for the Summer Internship is as follows:

Online Initial application form - youll be asked to provide some basic personal details and answer eligibility questions.

Two online situational judgement tests (SJTs):
- the first assesses criteria important for all roles in our organisation in which you rate the appropriateness of responses to a series of short scenarios

for the second SJT, youll be asked to step into the role of an Intelligence Officer and use your judgement to assess the effectiveness of different responses to realistic scenarios. You dont need any knowledge of MI5s policies or procedures, just use your own judgement to identify the most and least effective options

Full application form youll be asked to provide your education details and work history and to answer some questions exploring your strengths and skills in relation to the internship.

Half day online assessment centre this consists of an interview, a roleplay and a written report.
Please note, you must successfully pass each stage of the process in order to progress to the next. Your application may take around 6 to 9 months to process including vetting, so we suggest that you bear this in mind until you have received your final internship offer.

Before You Apply
To take part in internships at the agencies, you need to be a British citizen or hold dual British nationality. Read more about our eligibility criteria.
This internship requires the highest security clearance, known as Developed Vetting (DV). Its something everyone in the UK Intelligence Community undertakes. Find out more about the vetting process.
Please note we have a strict drugs policy. So, once you start your application, you cant take any recreational drugs and youll need to declare your previous drug usage at the relevant stage. Previous drug usage doesnt make you ineligible to apply and you wont be penalised for it but you must be honest.
Remember, these internships are only open to university students in their penultimate or final year of study, who are also from an ethnic minority and socially or economically disadvantaged background. Before you apply, we advise you to consider setting up a separate email address for your contact with us, to ensure your personal and application correspondence remain separate. Try to avoid having identifying features in your email address, such as your first and/or surname and date of birth. This is good practice and will help you to manage your application with us more securely.
We offer reasonable reimbursement of travel costs for candidates attending in-person appointments during the recruitment and vetting process. Full details will be provided with your interview or assessment invitation.
Reimbursement is discretionary and will only be made in line with the Candidate Expenses Policy, as amended from time to time. Candidates must book their own travel, using the most economical option, and provide original hardcopy receipts for reimbursement.
Please note, you should only launch your application from within the UK. If you are based overseas, you should wait until you visit the UK to launch an application. Applying from outside the UK will impact on our ability to progress your application. You must be present in the UK to complete each stage of the recruitment process, and we are unable to maintain contact with you during any time you spend overseas. You should not discuss your application, other than with your partner or a close family member.
Right to withdraw statement:
