When every component you sell is made specifically for the customer, there's no such thing as a simple account conversation.
A customer isn't ringing to ask what you've got on the shelf.
They're talking about precision-engineered components, industrial gaskets and metal sealing technologies made specifically for their application.
There are specifications to understand, technical problems to solve and sometimes you need to get right into the detail before you can work out what they actually need.
That's where you come in as Key Account Manager.
You'll be based in the Leeds office, looking after some of the more complex technical customers.
So, while this is a Key Account Manager role, being good with people alone won't quite cut it. You need to be comfortable when the conversation gets technical.
Perhaps you started on the shop floor and understand precision engineering because you've actually been around it. Maybe you're an engineer who enjoys the customer side of things. Or you could already be an Account Manager within engineering or manufacturing who knows how to get beneath the surface of what a customer is asking for.
You don't need to know the answer to everything. But you do need to understand enough to ask the right questions, follow a complex conversation and know when something needs digging into further.
You'll manage an established portfolio of accounts, predominantly within oil and gas, although the business is actively diversifying into new markets.
And this isn't a disguised new business role. There's a BDM team bringing new customers through the door.
Your job as Key Account Manager is to look after them once they're there.
Build the relationship.
Understand what they need. Keep conversations moving internally and externally. And when there's a genuine opportunity to introduce another product or solution, you'll spot it.
No shoehorning products into conversations for the sake of hitting a number. You'll use HubSpot to keep everything organised, but this Key Account Manager role is really about what happens away from the CRM. The conversations, the detail and becoming someone your customers trust to understand what they're asking for.
And you'll need some pace about you.
It can get busy.
Customers need answers, priorities can shift and you'll be managing several conversations at once.
Being under pressure can't mean the quality of those conversations drops.
You're someone who can keep things moving without making a customer feel rushed.
Get that balance right, and you'll do well here.
What do you get in return?
£35,000 - £45,000 basic salary, depending on experience
20% bonus
37-hour working week
3:30pm finish every Friday
25 days' holiday plus bank holidays
Free onsite parking
Employee Assistance Programme
3% employer pension contribution
Death in service at 2x salary
So, if you're reading this as an engineer thinking, I could do the customer side of this, talk to me.
If you're already a technically minded Key Account Manager who misses having proper conversations about the products you represent, talk to me too.
Because this Key Account Manager role needs someone who can understand the detail without losing sight of the person on the other end of the conversation.
