Primary School Site Supervisor (Caretaker)
Location: Sherwood Primary School, Sherwood Way , Preston, PR2 9GA
Hours: 17.5 hours per week, Monday–Friday 3.15pm to 6.45pm
Pay: £14.00 per hour
Contract: Permanent - Part time, 42 weeks per year ( 39 weeks term time and 3 weeks shut down cleaning in the summer )
Annual Leave: Taken during school closure periods
Start Date: August 2026

Sherwood Primary School is looking for a dependable, hands-on and proactive Site Supervisor (Caretaker) to play a vital role in keeping our school safe, secure and welcoming.
This is more than just a maintenance role — you’ll be a key part of the school community. From unlocking the gates to ensuring classrooms and outdoor spaces are safe and ready for learning, your work will directly support staff and pupils every day.

What You’ll Be Doing
No two days are the same. Your responsibilities will include:
- Opening and securing the school site and managing the alarm system
- Supervising cleaning standards across the site and supporting the school cleaners some of your role will include cleaning ( cleaning required in shutdown cleans and cover - hall maintenance )
- Carrying out general maintenance and minor repairs (plumbing, fittings, small improvements)
- Completing and recording compliance checks (fire alarms, legionella, play equipment, ladders, extinguishers)
- Maintaining safe, tidy and welcoming outdoor areas — including litter picking, drain clearing, gritting and seasonal upkeep
- Monitoring and operating the heating system
- Managing waste and handling deliveries to the school
- Supporting school events with room set-ups and furniture movement
- Liaising with contractors attending site
In the event of the cleaner’s absence, you will provide cover (additional hours paid at overtime rates).
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking someone who is:
✔ Practical and confident using manual and power tools
✔ Organised and able to work independently
✔ Reliable, punctual and takes pride in their work
✔ Comfortable taking initiative and solving problems
✔ A clear communicator with a professional approach
Experience with cleaning equipment and chemicals is desirable (training will be provided if needed).
Working Environment
You will often work independently, particularly during school holiday period, but will maintain regular communication with the Head Teacher and Bursar.
