1. Main Duties and Responsibilities Prescription Dispensing
- Receive prescriptions from patients or doctors.
- Check patient details on prescriptions.
- Select and label medicines correctly.
- Prepare medicines for the pharmacist to check and approve.
- Assemble items such as tablets, creams, liquids, or inhalers.
Patient & Customer Service
- Serve customers at the pharmacy counter.
- Provide advice on over-the-counter medicines (within training limits).
- Direct patients to the pharmacist for medical advice when necessary.
- Handle payments and transactions.
Stock Control
- Order medicines and pharmacy supplies.
- Check expiry dates and remove outdated medicines.
- Store medicines properly (including controlled drugs and refrigerated items).
- Maintain inventory records.
Administrative Tasks
- Maintain patient medication records.
- Process NHS prescriptions and paperwork.
- Use pharmacy computer systems to manage prescriptions.
- File prescriptions and documentation accurately.
2. Skills Required
A good Pharmacy Dispensing Assistant should have:
- Attention to detail (medication accuracy is critical)
- Good communication skills
- Customer service skills
- Basic maths skills
- IT/computer skills
- Ability to follow strict procedures
- Confidentiality and professionalism
