About the role
We are looking for a calm, patient and resilient Teaching Assistant to work one-to-one with a Year 11 student. This is a key role at a critical point in the young person’s education — you will be the consistent adult who helps them stay engaged, access their lessons and reach their exams in the best possible position.
You will build a strong working relationship with one student, adapting your support to their needs across the school day. Because this is a 1:1 role, the difference you make is direct and visible.
We are recruiting for an immediate start, so we welcome applications from candidates who are available now.
What you’ll be doing
● Supporting one Year 11 student one-to-one, in lessons and around school
● Helping the student access the curriculum, including maths and English at GCSE level
● Supporting the student to manage their emotions and regulate during the school day
● Working closely with teaching staff to adapt tasks, resources and expectations
● Encouraging independence, so support is gradually reduced rather than relied upon
● Keeping accurate records of progress and contributing to reviews
● Supporting exam preparation and, where appropriate, acting as a reader or scribe in line with access arrangements
What we’re looking for
Essential
● GCSE maths and English at grade 4 (or grade C, or an equivalent qualification)
● The ability to stay calm and consistent when a young person is finding things difficult
● Genuine patience, and a belief that every young person can make progress
● Good communication skills with both young people and adults
● A willingness to be trained, challenged and supported
● The right to work in the UK
● An enhanced DBS check with children’s barred list (we will arrange this)
Desirable
● Experience supporting young people with social, emotional and mental health needs
● A relevant Level 2 or 3 qualification in supporting teaching and learning
● Experience of GCSE-level work in maths or English
● Team Teach, de-escalation or similar training
We are very happy to hear from people coming from outside education — support work, youth work, sport, or care — who have the right qualities.
What we offer
● Full induction and ongoing training
● A supportive team and regular access to a line manager
● NEST Pension
● Term time only, so school holidays are your own
