About Us:
ClearRoute is an engineering consultancy bridging Quality Engineering, Cloud Platforms and Developer Experience. We help enterprises reliably bring high-impact digital products to market faster, cheaper, and safer, working with technology leaders facing complex business challenges.
We take as much pride in our people, culture and work-life balance as we do in making better software. We’re not just making better software. We’re making the making of software better. Collaborative, entrepreneurial and dedicated to problem solving, we bring the step change our customer need to sustain innovation. Our values challenge us to do the best we can for ClearRoute, our customers and most importantly our team. This is an opportunity for you to build the organisation from the ground up, use your voice to drive change and help transform organisations and problem domains.
We work in a hybrid way, with two days a week onsite in our London (Hatton Garden) office.
Role:
We are looking for an SDET to own quality for a modern React website augmented with AI. The site serves rich, interactive content — data exploration, charts, and dashboards — enhanced by an AI assistant that provides a conversational chatbot and dynamically generated content, hosted on Azure.
You will define the test strategy and build the automation frameworks and CI pipelines, covering both conventional web testing and the newer challenge of testing AI-driven behaviour — including guardrail testing to ensure the assistant stays safe, on-topic, and grounded in real data. Testing AI systems is a young discipline; we don’t expect you to arrive knowing it all, and you’ll grow into that side of the role with the team’s support.
Key Responsibilities:
Define and own the test strategy across the React frontend, the API backend, and the AI assistant
Build and maintain automation: browser E2E tests for the website and integration tests for the API
Run the automated suites in CI so every change is tested before merge and release
Test the AI assistant’s behaviour, including its guardrails: keeping responses safe, on-topic, and grounded in the underlying data
Carry out exploratory, risk-based testing of new features ahead of release, and reproduce issues reported from live use
Report on quality, and help developers write and own their tests
Agentic Evaluation Testing
A distinct part of the build-and-automation work is evaluating the AI agent itself — not just whether the site works, but whether the assistant behaves correctly. You will build and automate:
An evaluation suite that scores the assistant’s answers against curated question sets, so behaviour is measured rather than spot-checked
Regression runs that detect when a prompt, model, or skill change degrades answer quality, tool selection, or guardrail behaviour
Checks on the agent’s end-to-end workflows: choosing the right tools and data sources, completing multi-step tasks, and citing the data behind its answers
Scheduled and CI-triggered evaluation runs with tracked pass rates, so quality trends are visible over time
Required Experience:
6+ years in SDET / test automation roles
Strong programming ability in TypeScript/JavaScript
Experience testing modern single-page web applications: React, REST APIs, and authentication flows
Browser automation with Playwright, Cypress, or similar
Experience running automated tests in CI (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar)
A risk-based mindset: you prioritise testing by user impact
Ability to adapt to and adopt new technologies in a fast-paced AI environment
Desirable Experience:.
Testing AI/LLM-based systems, including guardrail or safety testing
Building an automation framework from scratch
Docker and Azure experience
Working proficiency in Python
Performance/load testing Accessibility testing (WCAG)
