About The Role
As a Maintenance Officer, your day-to-day will be dynamic and varied, involving a blend of planned tasks and responsive duties. You'll conduct preventative maintenance, routine inspections, and health and safety checks, ensuring our building systems, fixtures, and grounds are in top condition. This includes undertaking basic repairs, decorating, and gardening to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

To support the safe, effective and well-maintained operation of the Home through the delivery of responsive maintenance, repair, environmental and safety support services across the premises and surrounding grounds.
The Maintenance Officer is responsible for supporting the upkeep, safety, security and presentation of the Home environment while contributing to resident wellbeing, comfort and quality of life through safe and professional maintenance practices.
The role involves carrying out planned preventative maintenance, routine inspections, basic repairs, environmental upkeep and health and safety checks in accordance with organisational procedures, regulatory requirements and safe working practices.
The Maintenance Officer will work collaboratively with management, care teams, contractors and external service providers to support the safe and effective day-to-day operation of the Home.
The role may involve interaction with residents living with dementia, mental health conditions, behavioural support needs or complex care requirements depending on the service environment.
Service Delivery & Stakeholder Experience
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance, routine inspections and reactive repair works across the Home environment.
- Complete maintenance checks and monitoring activities on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis in accordance with organisational procedures and maintenance schedules.
- Respond appropriately to maintenance requests, faults, hazards or environmental concerns and escalate issues requiring specialist support where appropriate.
- Support the safe operation and maintenance of building systems, fixtures, fittings, equipment and environmental controls within the Home.
- Undertake basic repair, decorating, maintenance and environmental improvement works where appropriate and within the scope of the role.
- Ensure internal and external areas, pathways, entrances, storage areas and grounds are maintained in a safe, clean and accessible condition.
- Support grounds maintenance activities including grass cutting, hedge trimming, gardening and general environmental upkeep where required.
- Carry out routine visual checks of electrical equipment, appliances and cables and report faults appropriately in accordance with organisational procedures.
- Support the completion of fire safety, water safety, emergency lighting, temperature monitoring and environmental safety checks where required.
- Ensure tools, equipment and maintenance supplies are stored safely, securely and appropriately.
- Support the safe receipt, movement and storage of deliveries, supplies or equipment where reasonably required.
- Assist with driving or transport-related duties where reasonably required and appropriately authorised within the scope of the role.
- Support wider operational and environmental upkeep activities to maintain a safe, welcoming and comfortable environment for residents, visitors and colleagues.
Communication & Collaborative Working
- Work collaboratively with management, care, housekeeping, catering and wider multidisciplinary teams to support safe and effective service delivery.
- Liaise professionally with contractors, engineers, external service providers and suppliers where required.
- Communicate appropriately with residents, families, visitors and colleagues while maintaining professionalism and respect.
- Ensure resident dignity, privacy and wellbeing are respected when undertaking maintenance activities within resident areas.
- Participate positively in team meetings, handovers, health and safety discussions and operational communication processes where required.
- Recognise, report and appropriately escalate safeguarding concerns, incidents, accidents, hazards or environmental risks in line with organisational procedures and without delay.

- Ensure safe use, maintenance and storage of tools, equipment, chemicals and maintenance supplies.

- Ensure maintenance activities are carried out with consideration for resident wellbeing, dignity and comfort.

- Adhere to safeguarding, emergency procedures, fire safety requirements and organisational health and safety processes at all times, escalating concerns appropriately and without delay.

Required Criteria
- GCSE Grade C or above in English and Maths (or equivalent qualification); OR demonstrable literacy, numeracy and communication skills appropriate
- Experience working within a maintenance, facilities, environmental services or building support role.
- Understanding of health and safety, fire safety, environmental safety and safe working practices relevant to maintenance environments.
- Ability to undertake routine maintenance, environmental upkeep, repair and safety-check duties appropriate to the role
- Ability to identify, respond to and appropriately escalate maintenance faults, hazards or environmental concerns.
- Experience carrying out basic repairs, decorating, grounds maintenance or environmental maintenance activities
Desired Criteria
- Vocational qualification, City & Guilds or equivalent training relevant to maintenance, building services or facilities management
- Experience working within a healthcare, nursing home, residential care or regulated environment.
- Experience liaising with contractors, suppliers or external maintenance providers
- Experience using digital maintenance systems, compliance software or electronic reporting systems
