Due to continued and sustained growth, an exciting opportunity has come up for an Repairs & Maintenance Technical Manager to join our company, JH Mechanical and Electrical Services (JH-ME).

Reporting directly into the Head of Repairs & Maintenance, this role is responsible for overseeing operational job delivery for both the gas and building services teams; both of whom predominately operate in commercial buildings on behalf of a wide range of public sector clients; including universities, schools, local authorities, police authorities, fire brigades, housing associations and the private sector.
This job would suit someone who has a strong technical background in commercial gas, HVAC, legionella and/or plumbing, and who has line management experience in an office-based environment, having been in site-based roles as an engineer previously. They will be highly motivated, energetic, enthusiastic, a team player, have the ability to hit deadlines, and be keen to develop and progress as the business grows.
The role requires a thorough understanding of Commercial Gas, OFTEC, HVAC, legionella and plumbing regulations and principles; plus the ability to brief clients on technical matters in laymen’s terms, finding and providing solutions that are both cost effective and timely for our clients.
The role is also the line manger to the gas and building services teams and is responsible for ensuring all technical aspects of the job meet regulatory standards and are compliant to contractual requirements as specified by our clients. Consequently, at least 3 years off-the-job line management experience in a similar role is essential.
A key focus for the role is to oversee job delivery, supporting the operational teams with their training and development, and to offer technical advice and guidance where required.
Working collaboratively with the Repairs & Maintenance Estimator and our Contract Co-ordinators, this role will also act as an advisor on any relevant technical matters for the teams, helping to ensure quotes and jobs are accurately priced and clients are updated correctly on the job status and priorities to be addressed.
The role will also undertake regular inspections of both operatives and sub-contractor works, working closely with our QHSE Manager, providing and implementing any recommendations for improvements to the Head of Repairs & Maintenance and HR Manager.
This role has day-to-day responsibility for ensuring the workforce is productive and working towards company goals and objectives. This includes supporting the workforce with their training & development needs; and working with the management team and the HR Manager to implement improvements, where necessary.
The job also entails providing updates and reports in a timely fashion to the management team on the performance of the teams and to clients on our contract performance; the specific aim to build on good practice, as well as identifying and implementing areas for improvement, would be a fundamental part of the role.
Most importantly, this role works across teams and with a wide range of clients, suppliers, and internal staff; therefore excellent teamwork, communication and time management skills is essential for the role.
Due to the growing team and support needed., this role may be required to be part of our on-call rota for clients (1 in every 8-9 weeks at present).
WORKING HOURS: 40 per week

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Report to the Head of Repairs & Maintenance
2. Deputise for the Head of Repairs & Maintenance on technical matters, where required
3. Day-to-day management of the Repairs & Maintenance Teams and any relevant sub-contractors
4. Monitor and maximise productivity within the team
5. Verify all maintenance paperwork ensuring in is legally compliant and in line with industry best practice
6. Support the Projects Team by checking and verifying gas installation paperwork
7. Have responsibility for registering new appliances for warranty across the R&M teams, and also the project team when specified by the Head of M&E Projects
8. Support the Repairs & Maintenance Estimator in costing and securing best prices for the Gas and Building Services Teams work
9. Support the Repairs & Maintenance Estimator in ensuring materials are ordered in line with job specifications, securing best prices at all times
10. Ensure all works undertaken are H&S compliant (in line with company, HSE and CDM guidelines) and that staff are briefed on any H&S matters, or any industry / HSE updates, working closely with the QHSE Manager on all relevant matters
11. Ensure jobs are planned and executed on time and within budget, working with the Repairs & Maintenance Estimator and Contract Co-ordinators, providing information in a timely manner
12. Liaise with clients, keeping them up to date on job developments as required, working closely with the Contract Coordinators, providing information in a timely manner
13. Ensure all relevant certifications are signed off in a timely manner to meet client expectations, providing updates to the Contract Co-ordinators as required
14. Be part of the emergency call out rota, as required.
KEY TASKS:
- Act as the technical advisor for relevant company contracts
- Verify all maintenance paperwork is completed and is legally compliant / meets industry best practice, and provide to clients in a timely manner and in line with contractual obligations
- Complete site surveys prior to contract/works commencement, as required
- Support the Repairs & Maintenance Estimator in ensuring materials are ordered in line with job specifications, securing best prices at all times
- Issue and manage pre/post/job specific RAMS, working with the QHSE ensure all works undertaken is H&S compliant (in line with company, HSE and CDM guidelines) and that staff are briefed and trained on any H&S matters, or any industry / HSE updates
- Work with the Repairs and Maintenance Co-ordinators to schedule work for the team on the CRM and keep the company CRM up-to-date for all assigned jobs
- Set clear targets for the work to be undertaken and brief staff on the works to be done
- Directly manage teams of repairs & maintenance operatives and sub-contractors who undertake work for the company
- Day-to-day management of the Repairs & Maintenance Teams and any relevant sub-contractors
- Support the Projects Team by checking and verifying gas installation paperwork
- Have responsibility for registering new appliances for warranty across the R&M teams, and also the project team work when specified by the Head of M&E Projects
- Ensure all relevant certifications are signed off in a timely manner to meet client expectations

- Ensure the accurate recording of technician’s reports/maintenance records and that they are attached to the correct jobs in a timely manner
- Check and approve job cards daily

- Lead on managing job disputes/issues where required, representing the company positively and protecting its interests, and working alongside Contracts Co-ordinator’s and other team members
- Complete inspections of work on a regular, formal basis and provide feedback and training to staff via toolbox talks/one-to-one to improve performance
- Provide formal guidance and training for staff in a positive manner, feeding into individual and company reviews
- Support the management team with the retention of existing clients and continuous growth of the business
- Undertake any training & development deemed necessary for you to fulfil your duties

KEY SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE
Essential:
- Qualified or working towards a Higher Diploma/Degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical/ Building Services Engineering
- Commercial Gas Qualifications
- Commercial Gas (CORT1, CIGA1, ICPN1, TPCP1, TPCPIA)
- Commercial Gas COMCAT 1-5

- At least 3 years’ experience of managing a team of gas engineers
- Sound knowledge of Health & Safety and COSHH Legislation and M&E industry regulations
- Computer literate with good skills in word, excel, email, internet etc and CRM skills

- Highly organised, with the ability to oversee multiple jobs at any one time, often with pressured time frames and across numerous sites
- Able to work on own initiative.
