Purpose and Scope

Duties and Responsibilities
To plan, organise, and control the storage, movement, and availability of materials so that operations run efficiently, safely, and cost‑effectively, while maintaining accurate stock records and regulatory compliance.
1. Stores & Inventory Management
- Plan, organise, and control receiving, storage, issuing, and returns of materials and equipment, including sub-contracted production/assembly;
- Ensure optimal stock levels (min/max, safety stock, reorder points)
- Prevent stockouts, overstocks, obsolescence, and damage
- Conduct and oversee cycle counts, periodic and annual stocktakes
- Maintain accurate inventory records in ERP/WMS systems
- Implement FIFO / FEFO / batch or serial control where required
2. Logistics & Distribution Management
- Manage inbound and outbound logistics, including carrier selection and performance
- Coordinate deliveries to support production, projects, or customers
- Monitor transit times, logistics costs, and service levels
- Manage third‑party logistics (3PL) providers where applicable
- Ensure compliance with customs, import/export, and shipping regulations (where relevant)
3. Materials Planning & Control
- Work closely with Purchasing, Production, and Engineering teams to:
- Forecast material requirements
- Plan deliveries against demand
- Align materials availability with production schedules
- Manage shortages, substitutions, and expediting where required
- Manage site organisation, including temporary and external storage requirements
4. Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure stores and logistics operations comply with:
- Health & Safety legislation
- Manual handling regulations
- Hazardous materials storage (e.g. COSHH)
- Maintain safe warehouse layout, racking, and traffic management
- Ensure operators are trained and certified (FLT, lifting equipment, etc.)
- Support audits and inspections (internal, external, regulatory)
5. Systems, Processes & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain and improve warehouse and logistics processes
- Drive lean, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Optimise storage layouts, picking methods, and material flows
- Drive implementation or improvement of:
- ERP / MRP / WMS systems
- Barcoding or scanning solutions
- Develop and maintain SOPs and work instructions
6. Cost Control & Performance Management
- Identify and deliver cost‑saving opportunities
- Monitor key KPIs, such as:
- Inventory turnover
- Stock accuracy
- On‑time & in-full delivery
- Logistics cost per unit
- Obsolete or slow‑moving stock
- Report performance and risks to senior management
- Develop a strategy to push the ‘order before’ time to a minimum of 5pm for same day despatch
7. Team Leadership & People Management
- Lead, train, and develop stores and logistics staff
- Allocate workload and resources effectively
- Set objectives and conduct performance reviews
- Promote a culture of:
- Safety
- Accountability
- Continuous improvement
8. Stakeholder & Cross‑Functional Collaboration
- Act as the key interface between:
- Procurement
- Production / operations
- Engineering or projects
- Finance
- Suppliers and transport partners
- Support audits, financial close processes, and working capital reviews
- Provide data and insight to support planning and decision‑making
Requirements for the Role
Qualifications and experience
· Relevant qualification or progression towards (CILT, IoSCM)
· Strong inventory and logistics control expertise
Knowledge and technical skills
· ERP / MRP / WMS system proficiency
· Analytical and problem‑solving skills
· Leadership and people management capability
Other requirements
· Strong health & safety awareness
· Commercial and cost‑focused mindset
