Synel supplies and supports the time and attendance and access control systems used by businesses up and down the country: factories, hotels, schools, hospitals and distribution sites. Our head office and workshop are in Wembley.
We are looking for a Workshop & Field Service Engineer to join our engineering team. The job splits roughly 60/40 between our Wembley workshop and customer sites.
In the workshop you will configure and test hardware before it goes out, and repair units that come back. On site you will install it and fix faults, with technical support behind you and a field engineer alongside you on the bigger jobs.
In the workshop
- Building and configuring our own range of time and attendance terminals, both current models and legacy units still out in the field. Full training given on these
- Working with third-party access control hardware: Suprema readers such as the XPass, BioEntry and BioStation, HID and Mifare credentials, and Advantech ADAM I/O modules for fire alarm interfaces
- Setting each unit up to the customer's specification: IP addressing, server and web service settings, device IDs and firmware
- Testing every unit before it is despatched
- Diagnosing, repairing and refurbishing units that come back from site
- Getting replacement units out within our agreed despatch times
- Goods in and goods out: checking deliveries against the purchase order, booking them in, keeping stock records up to date and carrying out stock counts
- Packing and despatching orders by courier, UK and overseas
- Sending spares and replacement units out to our field engineers ahead of their jobs
On site
- Installing and commissioning terminals, readers, magnetic locks, power supplies and door hardware
- Finding and fixing faults on access control systems: readers, locks, break-glass and push-to-exit units, power supplies, relays, cabling and fire alarm interfaces
- Working alongside our field engineers on the larger installations
- Filling in a job sheet for each visit
What we are looking for
- A practical technical background: electronics, electrical work, security systems, IT hardware or something similar
- Confident with a laptop for configuring and testing equipment
- Enough networking knowledge to work with a customer's IT contact: static and DHCP addressing, subnets, gateways and ports
- Low voltage electrical work: 12V and 24V systems, power supplies, relays and terminating cable
- Full UK driving licence
- Ability to pass an enhanced DBS background check
- Happy working on your own and organising your own day
Useful but not essential
- Experience of access control or time and attendance systems
- Familiarity with Suprema, HID, Mifare, Paxton, Salto or similar access control hardware
- Fault-finding to board or component level
- Experience of a stock or inventory system
- Site safety training. We are SafeContractor accredited and work to a RAMS on installations
