We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Functional Skills English & Maths Tutor to support an 18-year-old learner with Autism and ADHD who is preparing to re-engage with education and work towards greater independence.
This is a rewarding opportunity to support a bright young person who has experienced significant disruption to her education and is now looking to rebuild her confidence through a patient, relationship-led approach.
About the Role
You will deliver 1:1 Functional Skills English and Maths tuition, alongside supporting the learner's confidence, emotional wellbeing and preparation for future college or employment opportunities.
An initial assessment will be completed to establish her current Functional Skills level before planning a personalised learning programme.
The primary aim is to rebuild engagement with education while working towards Functional Skills qualifications.
About the Student
The learner:
- Is 18 years old and currently NEET
- Has diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and ADHD
- Is approximately two years behind age-related expectations academically
- Enjoys learning when work is clearly explained and presented in manageable steps
- Benefits from practical demonstrations before attempting tasks independently
- Is working towards increased independence and hopes to pursue a career working with animals
She particularly enjoys:

- Films, YouTube and TikTok
- Travelling and spending time with friends
We're looking for someone who:
- Has experience supporting young people with Autism and ADHD
- Has experience delivering Functional Skills English and Maths
- Can build trust through a calm, patient and consistent approach
- Understands trauma-informed practice and emotional regulation
- Can adapt teaching to suit individual learning needs
- Is confident using modelling, scaffolding and small-step teaching approaches
What You'll Be Doing
- Deliver engaging Functional Skills English and Maths sessions
- Complete an initial baseline assessment and create an individual learning plan
- Break learning into manageable, achievable steps
- Build confidence through positive reinforcement and relationship-building
- Support preparation for Functional Skills qualifications
- Encourage independence, communication and preparation for adulthood
- Liaise with professionals where appropriate to support consistent outcomes
Teaching Approach
The successful tutor will:
- Prioritise relationship-building before increasing academic challenge
- Use clear, simple language and model new learning
- Present work in small chunks to reduce anxiety
- Allow processing time and provide frequent reassurance
- Create a calm, low-pressure learning environment
- Recognise when emotional regulation needs to take priority over learning
This learner responds best to adults who are patient, approachable and consistent.
Hours & Location
- Up to 10 hours per week
- Flexible part-time timetable (not five days per week)
- Afternoon sessions preferred
- Please avoid mornings, as requested by the learner
- Face-to-face delivery in either a community setting or residential provision in the Worksop area
Essential Requirements
- Experience tutoring or teaching English and Maths
- Experience supporting learners with Autism, ADHD and additional needs
- Strong relationship-building and communication skills
- Ability to deliver engaging, differentiated Functional Skills lessons
- Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one)
- Right to work in the UK
