We are currently recruiting an experienced Band 5/6 School Nurse for an ongoing position at a school supporting students with ongoing complex care needs and associated disabilities.
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced, confident, and compassionate Band 6 Nurse who has previous experience working with children and young people, ideally within a busy school or educational environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the health, wellbeing, and medical needs of pupils throughout the school day, working closely with school staff, parents/carers and other healthcare professionals.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Providing day-to-day nursing care and clinical support to children and young people within the school
- Assessing pupils who become unwell or injured during the school day and providing appropriate treatment
- Responding to medical emergencies and providing first aid and emergency care where required
- Supporting pupils with complex and ongoing healthcare needs
- Administering prescribed medication safely and accurately in accordance with relevant policies and procedures
- Maintaining accurate medication records, clinical notes and healthcare documentation
- Developing, reviewing and implementing individual healthcare and care plans
- Carrying out appropriate health assessments and monitoring pupils’ health and wellbeing
- Supporting the management of long-term conditions such as asthma, epilepsy, diabetes and allergies/anaphylaxis, where applicable
- Supporting pupils with enteral feeding, gastrostomy care and other clinical interventions, where required and within competency
- Supporting children and young people with physical disabilities and additional/complex needs
- Monitoring and escalating any changes or deterioration in a pupil’s condition
- Liaising with parents and carers regarding pupils’ healthcare needs
- Working closely with teachers, teaching assistants, therapists, GPs, community teams and other healthcare professionals
- Attending and contributing to multidisciplinary meetings and reviews where required
- Promoting health education, healthy lifestyles and emotional wellbeing
- Supporting safeguarding procedures and escalating concerns appropriately
- Supporting infection prevention and control procedures within the school
- Ensuring emergency medication and medical equipment are appropriately stored, checked and available
- Providing advice and guidance to school staff regarding pupils’ healthcare needs
- Supporting staff with relevant healthcare training and competency, where appropriate
- Maintaining confidentiality and ensuring all clinical practice complies with NMC standards, safeguarding requirements and school policies
Essential Requirements
✅ Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
✅ Appropriate experience working at Band 6 level
✅ Previous experience working with children and young people with complex medical requirements
✅ Previous experience within a busy school/educational environment
✅ Confident managing a varied and potentially complex caseload
✅ Excellent communication, clinical and organisational skills
✅ Strong understanding of safeguarding children and young people
✅ Able to work independently and as part of a wider multidisciplinary team
✅ Full UK driving licence and access to a car
