Part-time Gardener, 4 days/ week. 12-month fixed contract.
A rare opportunity has arisen for a dedicated, passionate, and professional gardener to join a knowledgeable and friendly team at Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens, on the Dorset Jurassic Coast.
Introduction
The history of Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens dates back to 1765, having originally been home to rare and exotic plants being brought to Britain by Georgian and Victorian plant collectors. Today it boasts one of the most varied collections of trees and shrubs in the British Isles, comprising 30-acres of beautifully curated, experimental garden, much of it designed naturalistically to mimic the biodiversity hotspots of the world
Working with us
As part of a team of 6 gardeners, you will be in a passionate, friendly and professional unit practising the highest horticultural standards. Applying your passion for horticulture, plants and gardens, you’ll be responsible for the maintenance and development of a key area within the garden.
No two days are the same at Abbotsbury. Your typical duties may include weeding, pruning, planting, watering, mulching and garden machinery use.
The vacancy
The vacancy would be 4 days a week including Occasional weekend work (1 Sunday every 4 or 5 weekends). This role is on a 12 months fixed-term contract, but there may be the chance to stay on after that.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
Essential:
· A passion for plants and horticulture
· Physically fit and happy to work in all weather conditions
· RHS level 2 qualification, equivalent qualification, or equivalent work experience.
· Knowledgeable about horticulture and plants, with high standards of work.
· Confident with the safe operation of garden machinery
Desirable:
· Experience working in a garden open to the public
· PA1, PA6 spraying certificates
· Cross-cutting and maintenance chainsaw ticket

· Occasional weekend work on a 4/5 week rota
· 21 days holiday + bank holidays, increasing with service (pro rata’d)
