The Experienced Lab Technician is responsible for producing, glazing, fitting and finishing spectacles to a high standard, ensuring that every pair meets the required quality, accuracy and safety standards before being supplied to the customer.
Working as part of the store team, you will combine practical optical skills with excellent attention to detail, helping to deliver spectacles efficiently while maintaining the quality and service standards expected by Specsavers.
Key Responsibilities
- Glaze and fit ophthalmic lenses into a wide range of spectacle frames using the latest laboratory equipment and techniques.
- Read and accurately interpret spectacle prescriptions, lens specifications and glazing instructions.
- Carry out lens verification and quality checks to ensure spectacles meet the required prescription, measurements and optical standards.
- Accurately measure and mark lenses, including checking pupillary distances, fitting heights and other relevant measurements.
- Operate and maintain edging, glazing and other optical laboratory equipment safely and effectively.
- Carry out repairs, adjustments and minor remedial work on spectacles where appropriate.
- Identify and resolve glazing, lens or frame issues and escalate more complex problems when necessary.
- Ensure completed spectacles are clean, correctly assembled and presented to the required standard before collection or dispatch.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe laboratory environment.
- Follow all relevant health and safety, COSHH and company procedures.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure work is completed within agreed turnaround times.
- Work closely with dispensing, optical and management teams to resolve queries and ensure customers receive the correct spectacles.
- Support colleagues and contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the store.
- Keep knowledge of optical products, lenses, frames, equipment and laboratory procedures up to date.
Skills and Experience
Essential:
- Previous experience in an optical laboratory, glazing or spectacle manufacturing environment.
- Good understanding of spectacle lenses, frames and prescriptions.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent manual dexterity.
- Ability to work accurately to measurements and specifications.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage workload and deadlines.
- A commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication skills and a professional approach.
- Commitment to working safely and following established procedures.
