Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Garden Centre Assistant to support our team on Sundays. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for gardening and horticulture, combined with excellent communication skills and a friendly, approachable demeanor. This role offers an opportunity to engage with customers, assist with product merchandising, and contribute to creating an inviting environment for garden enthusiasts. The successful applicant will be proactive, well-organized, and eager to share their knowledge of plants and gardening supplies. This role is very physical and will require you to be on your feet for long periods.
Responsibilities
- Greet customers warmly and provide knowledgeable assistance on gardening products, plants, and horticultural supplies.
- Support the organization and merchandising of stock to ensure an attractive and accessible shopping environment.
- Assist customers in selecting suitable plants and gardening tools based on their needs and skill levels.
- Maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of the garden centre, including displays, walkways, and storage areas.
- Provide information about plant care, seasonal planting tips, and gardening techniques.
- Support inventory management by receiving deliveries, checking stock levels, and reporting shortages or damages.
- Foster a welcoming atmosphere by demonstrating excellent communication skills.
- Supervising and supporting voluntary staff and service users with mental health conditions
- Ensure stock is adequately watered and maintained to a high standard
This is a position of responsibility as the candidate will be a key holder, and in absence of senior staff, will be responsible for the site.
Experience
- Previous experience in retail, gardening, or horticulture is essential; enthusiasm for learning is valued.
- Strong organizational skills to manage stock displays efficiently and keep the centre well-presented.
- Knowledge of gardening practices, plant types, and horticultural products is essential.
- Excellent communication skills to engage effectively with customers from diverse backgrounds.
Chestnut Nursery is a project of the charity Plants and Minds supporting adults with mental illness and has gained local acclaim for its excellent quality plants and high – quality customer experience. It is through the sale of homegrown plants that the charity raises income for its sustainability. The successful candidate will be resilient and able to manage stressful situations and high seasonal workloads. You will be required to support voluntary staff and service users with mental health conditions.
