BCU Sports Development Officer
JOB PURPOSE:
Birmingham City University are recruiting a Sports Therapist to work across our sports programmes. The successful candidate will lead the medical placement therapy team for our sports clinics on a Monday (5:30-8:30) and Tuesday evening (6:00-9:00) (3 hrs per clinic) as well as lead the placement therapy team for home matches on Wednesday afternoons (4 hrs). Additional aspects of the role are explained in detail later in this job description.
EMPLOYMENT TERMS:
The successful individual would be employed as a casual staff member at Birmingham City University between September 2026 through to April 2027. The candidate would be subject to an end of season review with excellent prospects for continuation thereafter for September 2027.
MAIN DUTIES:
The post-holder will be expected to:
To oversee a team of undergraduate sports therapists/first aiders for both the Monday and Tuesday evening clinics and home fixtures on Wednesday afternoons
Manage the administration for the evening clinics to include bookings, data collection, record keeping and student/coach feedback
To provide any relevant NGB or appropriate body with the necessary medical data as stipulated in their regulations
Provide guidance, mentorship, placement oversight and observation to the undergraduate therapist’s team. This role would suit someone who is looking to develop their mentoring/development skills or someone who has experience in undertaking this already.
Provide pre-game taping, massage and any additional treatment as required
Manage first aid kit management on match day
Lead with any pitch side treatment for injuries or first aid that cannot be managed by the sports therapy students
To liaise with the MDT to support the management of injured of players as required
To support any athletes who requires treatment follow up to book in to the evening clinics from a match day
To be able to work alongside coaches, management and captains to discuss player welfare, treatment plans and their availability in upcoming games
To be able to manage players expectations and discuss their management plan
To understand the importance and risk associated with head injuries and discussing this with players to ensure they do not return to play too early.
Provide a planned programme of continuing professional development and mentoring to the placement students, including attendance at internal and external meetings and courses (as required and necessary)
Any other duties as may reasonably be required, consistent with the grade of the post
General
1. Co-operate in any staff development activities required to effectively carry out the duties of the post and to participate in BCU Sport reviews and development schemes.
2. Compliance with all BCU policies and procedures.
3. Comply with all legislative and regulatory requirements.
4. To promote a positive image of BCU.
5. Any other duties commensurate with the level of the post, which may be required from time to time including evening and weekend work.
Qualifications & Attainments
Essential:
- BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy / Physiotherapy / Sports Rehabilitation
- Member of the Society of Sports Therapists / British Association of Sports Rehabilitators and Trainers or Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and Health and Care Professions Council registered
- FA/RFU Pitchside first aid qualification- minimum EFAiF or equivalent or ability to qualify as soon as possible
- RFU Pre-Hospital Immediate Care in Sport Level 2 – and/or ITMMiF or ability to qualify as soon as possible
