About the Role
Study Mind is seeking a compassionate and experienced Functional Skills Tutor to support a care-experienced Post-16 student working towards Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths.
This is a rewarding opportunity to work with a young person whose education has been significantly disrupted through multiple placement moves. Your role will focus on rebuilding confidence, developing essential English and Maths skills, and supporting him towards his long-term goal of securing an apprenticeship.
The successful tutor will understand that trust and consistency are the foundations of progress.
About the Student
Our student is a resilient young person who has experienced multiple changes in placement and education throughout his childhood.
Despite these challenges, he has a clear ambition of securing an apprenticeship and recognises that achieving Functional Skills qualifications is an important step towards this goal.
The placement will begin with relationship building and baseline assessment before progressing into structured Functional Skills tuition.
The student has experienced:
- Significant disruption to education
- Multiple care placements
- Separation from family members
- Reduced timetables and exclusions
- Gaps in English and Maths learning
His barriers are primarily relational rather than academic. Building trust with a consistent adult is essential before expecting sustained academic engagement.
Your Role
You will deliver engaging 1:1 face-to-face tuition, including:
- Functional Skills English
- Functional Skills Maths
- Initial baseline assessment
- Confidence building
- Employability-focused learning
- Emotional regulation support throughout sessions
- Preparation for Functional Skills examinations
The successful tutor will also work with the residential home and wider professional network to provide consistent support and encourage sustained engagement.
Student Interests
Using the student's interests to contextualise learning will help maximise engagement.
He enjoys:
- Scaffolding
- Carpentry
- Practical, hands-on learning
- Working towards future employment
Where possible, Functional Skills should be linked to real-life scenarios and vocational contexts that support his apprenticeship ambitions.
Teaching Approach
The successful tutor will:
- Prioritise relationship building before academic challenge.
- Deliver calm, structured and supportive sessions.
- Break learning into small, manageable steps.
- Regularly revisit prior learning to strengthen understanding.
- Use practical, real-world examples to teach English and Maths.
- Build confidence through regular praise and achievable goals.
- Adapt learning around the student's emotional presentation on the day.
Sessions should initially be low demand, gradually increasing in length and complexity as engagement develops.
Care Experience Matters
This placement would particularly suit someone with experience working with:
- Care-experienced young people
- Residential children's homes
- Looked After Children (LAC)
- SEMH
- Trauma-informed practice
- Relationship-based mentoring
An understanding of attachment, trust-building and the impact of disrupted childhood experiences will be invaluable.

Experience supporting young people into apprenticeships or further education would be advantageous.
- Female tutor preferred for this placement.
- Experience delivering Functional Skills English and Maths.
- Experience working with care-experienced or vulnerable young people.
- Calm, patient and nurturing approach.
- Excellent relationship-building skills.
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
- Strong safeguarding knowledge.
Location:
Face-to-face tuition delivered within the student's residential home, local library, or another agreed community venue in the Rochester area.
Hours:
- Up to 12 hours per week
- Sessions are expected to build gradually, beginning with shorter sessions before increasing towards the full commissioned hours.
- Days and times to be agreed with the residential home.
