About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and highly organised Transport Planner to join our specialist haulage operation. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and coordinating general and abnormal load movements across the UK and EU while ensuring compliance with all transport legislation, customer requirements, and operational standards.
This role requires strong logistical planning skills, excellent communication, and a solid understanding road transport regulation, routing, permits, and driver management.
Key Responsibilities
· Plan and coordinate daily transport operations for curtain sider and flat-bed trailers.
· Schedule vehicle movements efficiently to maximise fleet utilisation and minimise downtime.
· Ensure all routes are compliant with UK transport regulations, bridge restrictions, and abnormal load notifications.
· Arrange permits, escorts, police notifications, and movement orders where required.
· Liaise with drivers, customers, ports, site contacts, and third-party contractors.
· Monitor driver hours, Working Time Directive compliance, and tachograph regulations.
· Respond quickly to operational issues including delays, breakdowns, and route changes.
· Maintain accurate transport records, delivery schedules, and operational documentation.
· Provide excellent customer service and regular delivery updates.
· Coordinate backloads and return loads to improve operational efficiency.
· Ensure all loads are secured and transported in line with health & safety and DVSA requirements.
· Work closely with the workshop team regarding vehicle availability and maintenance scheduling.
Requirements
· Previous experience in transport planning within road haulage industry
· Strong knowledge of flatbed trailer operations and abnormal load movements.
· Understanding of STGO regulations, route planning, and transport compliance.
· Experience using transport management systems (TMS) and vehicle tracking software.
· Excellent geographical knowledge of the UK road network.
· Strong organisational and problem-solving abilities.
· Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
· Good communication and customer service skills.
Desirable Experience
· Transport Managers CPC Qualification
· Experience arranging police escorts and ESDAL notifications.
· Experience with planning ADR load movements
· Familiarity with FORS and fleet compliance standards.
