Night Manager (Duty Manager – Night / Fire Controller)
Reports to: Operations Manager
Shift Length: Night shift, flexible hours (rota-based)
Role Overview
The Night Manager is responsible for leading and coordinating all night-shift activity at The Noke Hotel, ensuring the security, presentation and smooth overnight running of the site are maintained to the standard required by the Senior Management Team.
The Night Manager is the senior on-site point of contact overnight, overseeing the Security, General Assistant and any Maintenance cover on shift, ensuring all checklists and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are completed correctly, and providing a clear, accurate handover to the Day Manager at the end of each night. The Night Manager also acts as the site's Fire Controller during their shift.
This is a hands-on, on-site leadership role. The Night Manager is expected to actively check, verify and follow up on issues raised by their team — not simply log them — and to escalate promptly wherever safety, security or compliance may be at risk. Heightened vigilance and lone-working discipline are essential overnight.
Alongside carrying out security duties personally, the Night Manager holds oversight of the wider Security team's performance and leads the evening audit of the outgoing day shift. The role also takes the lead on M&E and statutory compliance monitoring, cleaning and grounds standards, property inventory, and facilities/security tracking overnight, and reports into management on a weekly basis, alongside daily updates on active projects.
Key Responsibilities
1. Shift Leadership & Team Coordination
- Lead and coordinate the night shift, including Security, General Assistant and any Maintenance cover on site.
- Conduct a shift briefing at the start of each night, covering outstanding issues, risks and priorities from the Duty Manager handover diary.
- Carry out spot checks on staff compliance with checklists, PPE and equipment requirements.
- Ensure staff clock in/out correctly using Deputy and confirm shift start/end on the Time & Attendance Slack channel.
- Ensure all night staff sign the body cam and pager sign-in sheets on the Rose Lounge security notice board.
2. Security Team Oversight & Evening Audit
- Hold day-to-day oversight of the on-site Security team, tracking what has been done and checking that standards are being maintained — this sits alongside, not instead of, the Night Manager's own security duties.
- Take the lead at the start of the night shift to audit the outgoing day shift: confirm all scheduled checks and checklists were completed and logged, and that equipment was returned in good working order.
- Follow up directly with day security staff on any gaps identified during the evening audit and record the outcome.
3. Lone Working & Patrol Oversight
- Ensure staff check in with the control room at the start, midpoint and end of every outdoor patrol.
- Confirm the required number of outdoor and indoor patrols are completed each shift, signed off on the O&A corridor sheet, and logged on Slack.
- Escalate immediately — attempting contact within 5 minutes — if any lone worker fails to check in as expected.
- Ensure patrol routes are randomised and never predictable.
4. Building Security & Compliance Oversight
- Confirm all CCTV cameras and motion sensors are functioning at the start of shift; escalate faults to maintenance without delay.
- Check the battery status of the front door ring bell and other monitored devices.
- Physically verify all entry/exit points, doors and windows are locked in line with the Door & Window Security SOP.
- Review the Lock & Padlock Code Change Log and ensure scheduled code changes are not overdue.
5. Contractor & Access Management
- Verify and log any emergency or out-of-hours contractor access, ensuring valid ID and authorisation before entry is granted.
- Escort, or arrange escort for, any contractor or visitor on site overnight.
- Ensure all access events, including failed attempts, are logged.
6. Fire Safety & Emergency Response (Fire Controller)
- Act as the designated Fire Controller during night shift hours.
- Lead evacuations, fire drills and emergency response procedures.
- Check the fire panel at the start of shift and escalate any faults immediately to the Operations Manager.
- Confirm fire safety walks have been carried out correctly and that completed Fire Safety Walk Checklists are filed properly for audit and compliance purposes.
- Maintain fire and health & safety compliance logs and records in SAEKER.
7. Reporting, Escalation & Handover
- Log all security breaches, incidents and maintenance issues in SAEKER and Slack without delay.
- Escalate incidents in line with the Escalation Level Framework, contacting the Operations Manager and, where required, emergency services.
- Prepare and deliver a full, accurate handover — verbal and written — to the incoming Day Manager.
- Maintain the Duty Manager handover diary and shift documentation.
8. Health, Safety & Insurance Compliance
- Ensure all night-shift activity supports the property's health, safety and insurance compliance requirements.
- Monitor lone-working check-ins and equipment (radio, pager, body cam) for all night-shift staff.
- Ensure no staff member leaves site without communicating their reason or whereabouts.
- Report any hazard, breach or near miss to the Operations Manager immediately.
9. M&E, Compliance & Contractor Oversight
- Monitor M&E systems and the server room overnight, flagging any faults immediately and coordinating an emergency contractor call-out where required.
- Support the site's statutory compliance programme — PAT testing, fire extinguisher servicing, and other compliance devices and equipment — by reporting any faults identified overnight.
- Record any contractor works taking place overnight, ensuring RAMS, permits and certificates are filed correctly.
10. Cleaning & Grounds Standards
- Ensure the O&A area, security desk and Rose Lounge are kept clean and tidy, including hoovering, and that bins are cleared.
- Check that the General Assistant's cleaning and support duties are being carried out to the expected standard overnight.
11. Inventory & Facilities Tracking
- Compile and maintain a full inventory list of all items and equipment held at Noke, and report this to management.
- Build and maintain a maintenance and facilities tracker.
- Build and maintain security trackers.
- Check that equipment and inventory items — including radios, pagers and body cameras — are signed in and out correctly at the start and end of shift, and follow up on any missing or unsigned items.
12. Correspondence & Post
- Secure any outstanding correspondence, post or deliveries left from the day shift, and hand over anything requiring action to the incoming Day Manager.
13. Reporting Cadence
- Submit a weekly report covering security, compliance, cleaning/grounds, inventory and maintenance status.
- Submit a daily report covering the specific projects being worked on that night.
