Hours: Part-time hours of 18 hours per week over 3 days. Full time, 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday may also be considered.
Contract type: Permanent – full time or part time
Salary: £27,000 – £30,000 per annum (based on a 40-hour week, equal to £12.98 – £14.42 per hour), depending on experience and qualifications
Holiday: 28 days per year, inclusive of public holidays (pro rata for part-time hours and for any partial holiday year)
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The Accounts Assistant supports the day-to-day running of the finance function at RPL Construction Ltd, making sure financial records are accurate, transactions are processed on time, and the business stays compliant with HMRC and internal financial controls. Working closely with the directors, contract managers and site teams, the role keeps cash, costs and supplier relationships under close control across a portfolio of concurrent construction and maintenance contracts.
This is a hands-on role in a growing business. The successful candidate will have the scope to take on broader finance responsibilities as the company develops.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Purchase ledger and subcontractors
· Process supplier and subcontractor invoices, matching to purchase orders, delivery notes and agreed rates
· Prepare payment runs, resolve queries and maintain strong supplier relationships
· Verify subcontractors under CIS, apply the correct deduction rates and produce monthly CIS returns and payment and deduction statements
· Maintain subcontractor records, including insurance, qualifications and compliance documentation, in conjunction with the compliance team
Sales ledger and cash
· Raise client invoices and applications for payment, including retentions and valuations, in line with contract terms
· Monitor aged debt, chase outstanding payments and escalate issues promptly
· Perform daily and monthly bank reconciliations and allocate receipts accurately
Records, reporting and compliance
· Maintain accurate financial records, filing systems and document version control
· Assist with payroll preparation, timesheets, expenses and mileage claims
· Post journals and support month-end and year-end close, including accruals, prepayments and ledger reconciliations
· Prepare VAT returns for review, applying the domestic reverse charge correctly for construction services
· Support job costing, budget tracking and cost value reporting so project margins are visible and up to date
· Provide documentation and schedules for accountants, auditors and funders as required
· Work within company policies, financial controls and relevant accounting standards, and suggest improvements where processes can be tightened
· Take on additional duties as the business grows and finance responsibilities develop
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Qualifications
Essential: Good standard of general education, including GCSE Maths and English at grade C/4 or equivalent
Desirable: AAT qualified or part qualified (study support available)
Experience
Essential: Experience in an accounts, bookkeeping or finance support role
Desirable: Construction sector experience; exposure to payroll, VAT returns and month-end close
Technical knowledge
Essential: Confident with purchase ledger, sales ledger and bank reconciliations; good working knowledge of Excel and accounting software
Desirable: Knowledge of CIS, retentions and the VAT domestic reverse charge; experience of Xero
Skills and abilities
Essential: Strong numerical accuracy and a real eye for detail; well organised, able to prioritise and work to month-end deadlines
Desirable: Able to spot and query anomalies in costs or invoices; confident improving and documenting finance processes
Personal qualities
Essential: Discreet and trustworthy with confidential financial information; reliable and self-motivated; works well independently and within a small team
Desirable: Comfortable working in a growing business where responsibilities evolve
Other requirements
Essential: Eligible to work in the UK; able to work from the Newport office as required
