We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our engineering team in London. This is a hands-on, individual-contributor role for someone who has shipped production systems, made sound architectural decisions, and can communicate technical trade-offs clearly to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
The successful candidate will take ownership of systems across their full lifecycle( design, development, deployment, and ongoing support) and will play a key role in shaping engineering standards across the team.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build backend services capable of handling production-scale traffic, with consideration for scalability, latency, and fault tolerance from the outset
- Write clean, well-tested code across our technology stack (primarily Python, Node.js, and Java)
- Conduct thorough code reviews, with attention to long-term maintainability rather than surface-level style
- Take ownership of key architectural decisions and present them clearly in design reviews
- Collaborate closely with Product teams to define realistic scope and timelines, providing technical input where requirements are not yet fully feasible
- Improve CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and deployment processes on an ongoing basis
- Mentor mid-level and junior engineers through structured code review and pairing
- Diagnose and resolve production issues efficiently and calmly under pressure
Required Skills and Experience
- A minimum of 5 years' experience building and shipping production software, including at least 2 years in a senior or technical leadership capacity
- Strong proficiency in at least one backend language (Python, Java, Go, or Node.js), with sound judgement in applying appropriate solutions
- Demonstrated experience with distributed systems, including message queues, caching layers, and databases operating at scale
- Practical experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including an understanding of cost and reliability trade-offs
- Strong working knowledge of CI/CD practices and containerisation technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Confident use of SQL, along with an understanding of when NoSQL solutions are more appropriate
- A demonstrated record of technical leadership, whether formal or informal
- Eligibility to work in the UK (please note we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role)
Desirable Skills
- Experience with event-driven architectures or message queue technologies (Kafka, RabbitMQ)
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or Pulumi
- A portfolio of open-source contributions or technical writing
Benefits
- 25 days' annual leave, plus bank holidays
- Private health insurance
- Employer pension contributions matched up to 5%
- Equity or share options (details available at interview stage)
- Dedicated budget for professional development, training, and conferences
- A collaborative engineering culture with a strong emphasis on shipping quality work regularly
