Job Title: Catering Skills Tutor
Location: Leicester City Centre and schools across the East Midlands
Contract: Term Time Only, 24 hours over 4 days, Monday to Thursday, 9 am until 3 pm
Salary Range: £14- £19.50
Job Purpose
To deliver engaging and practical Catering Skills training to young people attending 1st Step Education and Training and partner schools across the East Midlands. The successful candidate will support learners to develop practical catering, food preparation, kitchen safety, and hospitality skills while encouraging confidence, independence, and employability.
The role involves delivering pre-planned sessions, assessing learner progress, maintaining a safe kitchen environment, and supporting young people with a range of educational, social, emotional, and behavioural needs.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
- Deliver pre-planned Catering Skills courses to groups of learners.
- Teach practical catering and hospitality skills, including food preparation, cooking techniques, menu planning, food presentation, customer service, and kitchen organisation.
- Deliver sessions both at the Leicester City Centre training base and within partner schools across the East Midlands.
- Create an engaging, inclusive, and positive learning environment that promotes participation and achievement.
- Differentiate teaching methods to meet a range of learning styles, abilities, and additional needs.
- Encourage learners to develop confidence, teamwork, communication, and employability skills.
- Promote high standards of professionalism, hygiene, and safe working practices.
Assessment and Learner Progress
- Assess and mark learner work in line with programme requirements.
- Monitor attendance, engagement, and learner progress.
- Provide constructive feedback to support learner development and achievement.
- Maintain accurate learner records and documentation.
Learner Support
- Act as a positive role model for young people.
- Build positive relationships that encourage engagement, confidence, and resilience.
- Promote positive behaviour and support learners to participate effectively in sessions.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, schools, parents/carers, and external agencies where appropriate.
Kitchen and Resource Management
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organised kitchen and teaching environment.
- Ensure all food hygiene, health and safety, and food storage regulations are followed.
- Monitor equipment and report any faults or maintenance requirements.
- Ensure ingredients, equipment, and resources are used efficiently and safely.
- Demonstrate and promote excellent food hygiene and infection prevention standards.
Safeguarding and Compliance
- Adhere to all safeguarding, child protection, health and safety, food safety, and organisational policies and procedures.
- Report safeguarding concerns promptly and appropriately.
- Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion throughout all learning activities.
- Attend staff meetings, mandatory training, and continuing professional development activities.
General Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute positively to the wider aims of 1st Step Education and Training.
- Support other vocational tutors and programmes where required.
- Participate in enrichment activities, open days, educational visits, and organisational events.
- Demonstrate flexibility in supporting the operational needs of the organisation.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the level of the post as directed by management.
- Recognise that responsibilities may occasionally extend beyond those listed in this job description to support the effective running of the organisation.
Professional Standards and Compliance
- Adhere to the organisation's staff dress code and uniform requirements at all times.
- Wear and correctly use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
- Maintain high standards of food hygiene and personal hygiene.
- Comply with all organisational policies, including safeguarding, health and safety, equality, diversity, data protection, and professional conduct.
- Attend and complete all mandatory training, including safeguarding, food hygiene, health and safety, Prevent, and any role-specific training.
- Participate in ongoing professional development to maintain and enhance professional competence.
Teaching experience is preferred, however training is provided. You will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check. This is a term-time only position.
Pay: £14.00-£19.50 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 12.0 per week
Work Location: In person
