About us This is a rare opportunity to join a small but passionate and highly motivated team that is evolving to meet the challenges of changing land use, local governance, and climate. The Romney Marshes Area Internal Drainage Board is an independent local authority responsible for managing water levels in the lowlands of Kent & East Sussex. We maintain a general supervision over all land drainage matters in a district spanning 33,000 hectares and are seeking an energetic, multi-skilled and pragmatic individual to play a key role in assisting the Water Bailiff. You will play a key role delivering the Board’s operational water level management function safely, effectively and sustainably.
Key Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to) Management of aquatic and bankside vegetation, scrub and trees using power tools. Operation and maintenance of water level control structures, outfalls, screens and pumping stations. Maintenance of Board tracking routes including fencing and culvert maintenance and replacement. Deployment and operation of mobile pumps. Watercourse inspections and reporting. Workshop - fabrication of stop boards and heave gates, maintenance of tools and equipment. Recording and reporting breaches of the Land Drainage Act and the Board’s Byelaws.
Do you have the attributes, skills, and experience we are looking for? Common sense, resilience, a strong work ethic and sense of duty. Diverse practical skills and an ability to problem solve. Proven ability to work safely alone and as part of a small team in all conditions. Experience of working with or for an IDB, the Environment Agency or in the land-based industries. Hold a full UK driving licence. You will live within reasonable travelling distance of our depot in East Guldeford, Rye.
