Housekeeper – Job Description

Reports to: Home Manager / Domestic Supervisor

Job Purpose
To maintain high standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and infection control throughout the care home, ensuring residents live in a safe, comfortable, and well-presented environment. The housekeeper plays an essential role in supporting the wellbeing and dignity of all residents.
Key Responsibilities1. Cleaning & Hygiene
- Clean residents' bedrooms, bathrooms, lounges, dining areas, hallways, and staff areas following daily/weekly schedules.
- Ensure high standards of cleanliness in all communal areas.
- Carry out deep cleaning tasks as required.
- Follow infection control procedures at all times.
- Clean spillages and deal with urgent cleaning requests promptly.
- Empty bins and dispose of waste safely, following the home’s waste management policy.
2. Laundry Duties
- Collect, sort, wash, dry, iron, and return residents’ personal clothing.
- Maintain laundry room cleanliness and organisation.
- Ensure all clothing is labelled correctly and returned to the correct resident.
- Handle delicate or specialist fabrics according to instructions.
3. Infection Control
- Follow all infection prevention and control procedures, including correct use of PPE.
- Support outbreak management (e.g., deep cleaning, enhanced cleaning schedules).
- Report any infection control concerns immediately.
4. Health & Safety
- Use cleaning chemicals safely and in line with COSHH regulations.
- Ensure all equipment is used and stored safely.
- Report hazards, damages, faults or maintenance needs promptly.
- Understand fire safety procedures and evacuation routes.
5. Resident Support
- Be polite, respectful, and sensitive when working in residents’ rooms.
- Maintain residents’ privacy and dignity at all times.
- Support residents with small tasks such as making their bed tidy if required.
- Report any concerns about a resident’s wellbeing to senior staff.
6. Teamwork & Communication
- Work closely with the domestic, care, and maintenance teams.
- Communicate clearly with colleagues and management.
- Attend training, meetings, and supervision sessions.
RequirementsEssential
- Previous housekeeping/cleaning experience.
- Understanding of infection control and hygiene standards.
- Ability to work independently and prioritise tasks.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Respectful, compassionate attitude towards older people.
Desirable
- Experience working in a care home or healthcare setting.
- Knowledge of COSHH and Health & Safety.
